No worries, it happens.
I'm careful about using well known and well reviewed outfits to buy from and never had a problem in the buy department with any cell phone. My problems back then were with making the play store work on a phone that was set up to prevent the play store from working at all costs. If you look at the Find 7 as an example and were there at the time you would have seen many many people go down in flames with their Chinese variants trying to get the play store to work. It could be done and by my reckoning being a rom guy going back to the original Windows Mobile before android ever came out it wasn't particularly hard, you just had to be able to follow instructions and read up before you jumped in. I might even go so far as to say easy. On the other hand a mistake could brick you and that mistake was a great deal easier to make than on the global version which much like any bootloader unlocked phone you buy now wasn't very easy to brick. The kicker there was that there was little extra cost involved in buying the global version but it was a lot less likely to bite you in the rear end.
At any rate as you state the variants sold outside China are much better bets but I'm not betting. I'm using on a phone that was the latest greatest only a few months ago, I don't need the phone, I just dig it. I'll buy and sooner rather than later if it turns out the phone can be unlocked and I can have my way with it. If not it's just one more pretty face that turned my head but wasn't meant to be.
