You grabbed the wrong man to quote, I've avoided Chinese market phones for a while having been fairly well burned with one some time back.
The only time I was really "burned" was by my overlooking the LTE Bands on an ASUS ZenFone AR (three different region specific models with the same model number} & I got stuck with a 20% restocking fee.

Otherwise, most sellers have been legit, it's just me & my Unicorn chasing of the perfect phone, LOL.....

Edit: @krabman
Yep, I did quote the wrong person, meant to pick a post preceding yours, sorry about that...

No worries, it happens.

I'm careful about using well known and well reviewed outfits to buy from and never had a problem in the buy department with any cell phone. My problems back then were with making the play store work on a phone that was set up to prevent the play store from working at all costs. If you look at the Find 7 as an example and were there at the time you would have seen many many people go down in flames with their Chinese variants trying to get the play store to work. It could be done and by my reckoning being a rom guy going back to the original Windows Mobile before android ever came out it wasn't particularly hard, you just had to be able to follow instructions and read up before you jumped in. I might even go so far as to say easy. On the other hand a mistake could brick you and that mistake was a great deal easier to make than on the global version which much like any bootloader unlocked phone you buy now wasn't very easy to brick. The kicker there was that there was little extra cost involved in buying the global version but it was a lot less likely to bite you in the rear end.

At any rate as you state the variants sold outside China are much better bets but I'm not betting. I'm using on a phone that was the latest greatest only a few months ago, I don't need the phone, I just dig it. I'll buy and sooner rather than later if it turns out the phone can be unlocked and I can have my way with it. If not it's just one more pretty face that turned my head but wasn't meant to be. :)

I'll try and fire up the r15 tonight and check. Did you get a email from Mike saying they're waiting on a DHL tracking number for the oppo find x? I did. Should be here next week I assume. Can't wait.

Got good news. First off no go on the vivo account on oppo phone.... But after you install Nova or whatever 3rd party launcher you want, just do the pm uninstall command and remove com.oppo.launcher and now you have the launcher you want and everything works fine. So there is hope :)

That's great news, perhaps we won't need an OPPO account for anything............
.......I hadn't planned on using any of their services anyway, including cloud storage, find my phone, game center,etc......

Me either. I have found with vivo and oppo that if you want to install a app not from the play store the way to get around password is to install it through the factory file manager. So all in all I think the phone can be made tolerable. Someone just posted a nice inverted them for the nex on the nex forum. I'm loving that now. Hope someone does it for the find x aswell

Yeah, it's ironic that the stock theme on this phone likely lacks any color.....

If the theme store for OPPO is anything like the VIVO themes, the pickings are gonna be slim.
I'm guessing the Oppo & Vivo themes are interchangeable & the 3rd party themes posted in the NEX forum will work.
I don't need anything crazy, just wanna break up the all white look, it's hard on the eyes.......

can you elaborate on this please? is it this command? pm uninstall -k --user 0?
i heard the launcher cannot be changed because the lock screen is tied to the system launcher.
thanks

Yes that's the command. As long as you already have another launcher installed. It will be fine. Lock screen will still work.
