They do not. I just tried it.Hi all,
Do the instructions in the OP still work with a brand new S3 from Sprint w/Jelly Bean? I don't want to start the steps if there are known issues. I'm sure it's probably noted in here somewhere but at 27+ pages, if someone can point me to the post or link with any changes on current phones, I'd be most appreciative. Or if the OP instructions still work, let me know that too and I'll give it a shot.
Thanks!
It looks right. But to be safe you can watch QBKing77's video here. It's what I used to root mine. Are the instructions in the OP still valid for a new S3 with JB installed or would I need to do anything different? I see they are over 6 months old so just wanted to check before I try to root my wife's phone.
Also, I won't be installing a custom ROM at all, this will mainly just be so she can use wifi tether on the rare times that she needs it,
Thanks.

Anyone have a current guide that works?

After Odin finished, did the phone automatically reboot, or did you power it down, and then go into recovery?

Untick Auto reboot. When Odin is done, power down your phone and then power up DIRECTLY into recovery.i let it reboot...on its own..if i follow this i get into the recovery i want...i

did it multiple times using odin but still nothing..
I got it, had to use the method i provided the link too but got it. ThanksUntick Auto reboot. When Odin is done, power down your phone and then power up DIRECTLY into recovery.
(You have to access your custom recovery before the phone boots, after using Odin. If you don't, the stock recovery will override the custom recovery. This has been mentioned MANY times now.)

Do you have a recovery? Have you tried flashing SuperUser under recovery? Also with whatever version of SU that you, have you made sure the binaries are updated? Finally what SU are you running, the one by CChain, Kouch, or SuperSU?I can't get this to work. Regardless of which recovery (CWM from this thread or the latest TWRP) I flash in Odin, I always end up with "Android system recovery", which only has an option to "Apply update from external storage". If I choose that option, I get "E:Failed to mount \sdcard (no such system or directory)". I don't have an sdcard in the phone at the moment (I will be getting one soon though).

Final update on this. After doing some more digging, I figured out what's going on.
Apparently the GSIII has an auto-reset script which automatically resets the recovery if you change it. Following the instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1775263 I was able to get in to TWRP and flashed the root file.

Ok. I thought that was a final update. Superuser is installed but I'm not getting root access at all. If I try su from within terminal emulator it gives me permission denied.
