Personal opinion - DO NOT USE THIS METHOD.

YOU WILL LOSE YOUR ABILITY TO USE THE 'BACK' BUTTON NATIVELY.

If you do not want to use the S-Pen constantly on stock firmware, stay away from this method.

WARNING! rooting your phone can void your warranty, do so at your own risk.

NOTE: These instructions below assumes you have a brand new phone just out of the box, all settings on default. If the default settings have been altered, please make sure you have the Ractivation Lock turned off in settings/Security or you will get a FAIL! message in Odin. (Thanks to Girn for pointing that out)

Download Kies (for the Drivers) from here http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/model/SM-N900WZKEBWA
If you don't use Kies just uninstall it as soon as the Kies install is complete.
During Kies uninstall it'll ask you if you want to keep the drivers, say yes to keep drivers.

Very Important! for Chainfire's rooting method to work, you must flash this tar via Odin, before you flash TWRP recovery, else it might Fail!

Download Chainfire's package from post #3
Select the file for the SM-N900W8 Canadian version, it includes the Odin and the Tar file to root your Notes 3.
Follow the flashing instructions from Chainfire's post #2

    Quick Root Steps:
    - (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
    - Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
    - Click the PDA button, and select CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
    - Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
    - (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
    - Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
    - Click the Start button
    - Wait for Android to boot (like 5 seconds)
    - Done

Important! make sure you Download TWRP version 2.6.3.2 (or newer) for hltecan models from http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/hltecan

    Quick TWRP Steps:
    - (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
    - Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
    - Click the PDA button, and select openrecovery-twrp-vX.X.x.x-hltecan.tar
    - Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
    - (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
    - Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
    - Click the Start button
    - Wait for Android to boot (like 5 seconds)
    - Done

Troubleshooting Steps for failed Chainfire's rooting via Odin:
Do not fled if you can't get Chainfire's tar to flash properly.

    - If you are unable to Boot, then go back into Download Mode.
    - Flash back any stock SM-N900W8 ROM via Odin
    - Then skip Chainfire's rooting Steps, and instead go straight into the TWRP steps
    - Once you have TWRP installed, restart the phone
    - Boot into TWRP (Vol-Up + Home + Power)
    - Once inside TWRP just select the option to reboot, pressing on any of the reboot actions will prompt you with
"Your phone doesn't seem to be rooted, Do you want to install SuperSU?"
    answer Yes by swiping
    - Reboot to System, then run SuperSU
    - When SuperSU is up, it'll ask you if to flash the root binaries, select the TWRP method
    - The phone will reboot again into TWRP installing the root, when done, just reboot back into system.
    - Done

As the OP is dated 2013 and not knowing what method you used and if you used outdated methods its impossible to comment .
