im using recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0

i am unable to wipe the SDcard or cache or dalvik cache
i don't get any error..it says the operation finished successfully but still file are found on the sd card nothing has been wiped

one more thing i have 2GB Sd card that came free with phone
when i set swap size 32MB, ext 2 512 MB ...i see SD card size as 1.33GB on the phone and the computer whats stored in the 512MB ? because if its not getting wiped
through recovery putting a new ROM is a little risky i think

If you have a nandroid backup created, why don't you try to repartition your sd card from recovery and then restore the backup.
Afterwards, you could try the wipe option once again and see whether it works.

Meanwhile,i suggest that you use v1.2 of the recovery.

i did try to wipe the Sdcard partition thrice all times it said the wipe was successful but all files remained :( so using my PC i formatted the whole SDcard

i re-partitioned the sdcard and installed CM 7.1.0 with beta 6.4...it comes with a built it clockworkmod ROM manager if it works properly then i shouldn't have any of these problems i hope :)

EDIT: i installed the thunderg 1.2.1 recovery my sdcard still doesn't get wiped even on this recovery after wiping sdcard ext and all user data i still all files intact on my SDcard  :(

wiping the sdcard ext will do nothing to the fat32 partition on your sd card. so, naturally your files on the fat32 partition will remain on the card.
After creating an ext partition on the card, only the fat32 partition is visible by default when you view thru your windows pc's explorer. to see the ext partition, you have to use specialised software like explore2fs etc.

Amazing guide, kudos to the writer!

I just have one suggestion, in the end of the KDZ_FW_UPD part when you describe what actually happens and the chances of the phone getting stuck on the Android logo at first boot, you should add the procedure for the Hard Reset (VOL-/HOME/POWER) as it seems to solve this problem most times (it did for me).

try formatting using panasonc sd formatter http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/index.html use beta 3 and then create the partition.

Moved here from first post due to lack of space on first post.

The features available in the recovery are:

Illustrative picture of Custom Recovery P500/Thunderg v1.1
USB-MS Toggle: mounts sdcard as mass storage
Backup/Restore:
Nand Backup: runs a nandroid backup of data, cache, boot, system
Nand Backup + .android secure: backs up above plus .android_secure on sdcard (froyo native apps on sd)
Nand + ext backup: data, cache, system, boot, plus apps2sd on ext partition (old style apps2sd)
Nand Restore: browse to and select nandroid backup to restore
Flash Zip from Sdcard: (the file to be flashed must be in root of SD card) IN CUSTOM RECOVERY VERSIONS 1.2 and above, zips can be extracted from inside folders. So, save the zips in a folder named AAA and flash the zip after browsing inside the folder through recovery. The folder name should be named 'AAA' so that it appears among the first on the recovery screen, since scrolling is not an option in recovery.
Wipe Menu:
Wipe data/factory reset: wipes data & cache
Wipe cache
Wipe Dalvik cache : Wipes Dalvik cache in all possible locations if moved by apps2sd
Wipe SD:ext : Wipes Apps2sd ext partition
Wipe Battery Stats
Wipe rotate settings
Wipe .android secure : Wipes froyo native .android_secure on sdcard
Partition Sdcard:
Partition SD: Partition sdcard for apps2sd (this formats card so all non backed-up data is lost)
Repair Sd:ext
SD:ext2 to ext3 : coverts apps2sd ext2 partition to ext3 (requires kernel support for ext3)
SD:ext3 to ext4 : same as above but ext3 to ext4 (requires kernel support for ext4)

Using the above features, you can make a backup of your current ROM, restore backups, create partitions on your SD card, wipe your phone and the SD card and then also go on to try Custom ROMs using the Flash from Zip option.

The scrolling in recovery is one of the issues I don't use AmonRa recovery anymore. It's Clockworkmod all the way. Sure it has it's disadvantages as the backup (all or nothing), it creates only EXT4 when using the partitioning from the menu and for some edify is a pain is the a$$.

Simplified Guide to Root & install Custom Recovery on P500

This is an abridged version of the first post which will enable you to Root your P500 and install version 1.2 of Custom Thunderg Recovery by AmonRa/modified by Drellisdee with a minimum of fuss.

Rooting
Get GingerBreak APK from here. Follow the instructions in the post and install it on your phone and root your phone.
This tool is able to root phones running stock android 2.2, 2.2.1 & 2.2.2. 'GingerBreak APK' permanently roots your phone. Also,GingerBreak might not install BusyBox and Superuser apps properly on your phone. These apps are required by many rooted apps for their proper functioning. So, use Root Checker from android market to verify the proper installation of these 2 apps.

1. Download Android Terminal Emulator from Android Market. Install it on your rooted phone.
2. Download the file "amon_ra_recovery_installer.zip" from here or here. Check the MD5 hash value of the downloaded 'zip' file using tools like HashTab etc. before proceeding further. Correct MD5 value : 86db8a52b01f049cadb8f097a4c5bd9e
3. Extract the contents of the 'zip' file to the root of the sd card (ie. not inside any folder) using tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR or any other similar tool.
4. Open the terminal emulator app on your phone and type in the command 'su' without the qoutes. This will prompt a popup on your phone from the SuperUser app asking you whether you want to give root permissions to the terminal emulator app. Click 'Allow' and proceed. You will notice that the shell prompt has changed from the previous user shell '$' to root shell '#' in the emulator app.
5. While in the root shell '#', type in the following command and press Enter. Wait and the phone will reboot into the Custom Recovery.
Code:
sh /sdcard/rf.sh

PS: Please do not forget to thank ungaze for his help in making the installation of custom recovery a very simple affair. Use the thanks button in his post to show your appreciation.

When most of the ROM's available for P500 become compatible with ClockworkMod Recovery and when it becomes officially supported by RomManager, I will update the post to make it the default recovery to install.

Well, the compatibility part is an easy task by using Amend2Edify tool. RomManager compatibility should be right around the corner. Mik has asked Koush to add support a couple of months back and it seems things started to kick in. Right now RomManager can use the already installed Clockworkmod recovery in order to flash files. Next step is to be able to download and install the latest recovery compiled version.

I like this version better, since we can already root every O1 of any android(or froyo) versions, the need for KDZ is next to none(except for developers that is). This makes it a whole lot simpler and un-intimidating to first time rooters.

Of-course we still do need to install the LG-drivers to use USB-ms toggle on recovery.

LG Thrive P506

Hey there. Can anyone help. I rooted my phone using gingerbreak and like a wiseazz, loaded a custom recovery image of "recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.2". Although the costom recovery loaded fine, I am stuck with a phone which has only blue and green colors. I loaded one of the custom 2.3 ROMs by Andy and it loaded fine, but still the graphic display is all messed up, only green an blue and some other tinges. When I look at the About phone I see that it says the model number as LG P500 , although mine is LG P506. Any help people :(
My wife will kill me. Its her phone!!

hey freak69, you should either add the android-tools to your path
or just go to the folder in the cmd window(programfiles/android/tools) and then run adb from there
That was a quick reply.. ok ill give it a try. I may just have to click your thanks button for that quick reply.. oh hell.. consider it done. :D

Ok this i where adb is on my computer... C:/programfiles(x86)/Android/android-sdk/platform-tools I added that to my path but still not working
Tried running adb from the exe. and it opened a terminal.. it ran some script and shut off..
Tried opening a command prompt and dragging adb exe into that and it runs through the script and stops here..

What you are getting is correct. Its basically printing out the help options for the adb command. The first thing you need to do is connect your phone through USB and type "adb devices"
Your device should be found. After this go ahead and do whatever the wise people on this forum have suggested for rooting, preferably the gingerbreak methos, which is painless.
