I upgraded to the new HTC-10 and I really miss the old alarm sound (abraft) so much so; that I want to get a copy from my old m8.

I poked around with it attached to my PC but I cant get to any of the system level sounds. Any idea on how to do this? The closest thing I could find to helpful is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50931506#post50931506

However the files provided do not have "Abraft" which is what im looking for.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, hvguy...

The audio file you're looking for is located in...

Code:
/system/media/audio/alarms
See attached screenshot.

I've extracted abraft.mp3 from my rooted M8 where you'll find it as a zipped attachment to this post. Just download, unzip it and enjoy.

Hope this helps...

AWESOME! I poked around and there is literally nothing there on my phone using the internal memory. However mine isnt rooted, possibly thats the issue.

Thanks again!

You're welcome, @hvguy. Glad to help.

Yeah, you wouldn't have found it in the normal Internal Storage... System media files are found in the /system partition.

And it turns out you don't need root to access and copy them; you just need an Android File manager capable of reading the /system folder. Such as, for example, ES File Manager.

I've just done a bit of tinkering with ES File Manager on my rooted M8, and with Root Access denied to it, as well as disabling the Root Explorer setting in ES File Manager, I was still able to navigate to /system/media/audio/alarms and copy any file I so chose.

I replicated this behaviour with another Android file manager called Dual File Manager, which haven't seen an update in two years and has never had root support. You just navigate your way UP the directory tree, out of Internal Storage and then drop back down into /system and navigate your way into the /media sub-folder and locate the /audio sub-sub folder.

I'm just so used to having root, I never normally give this sort of detail a second thought... About what is and what is not read accessible on non-rooted devices. I know /data/data isn't, but I'm pretty certain the whole of /system is readable without root and files can be copied from it.

However... I digress; this was only meant to be a short post :).

Enjoy your new HTC-10, @hvguy and being woken up every morning by Abraft :).
