You're spending too much time on a wild goose chase. The recovery is the right one, and it's probably not the reason for no OTAs.

There are a whole bunch of variables which may affect ability to get OTAs. Many of which may have anything to do with the phone. I've seen plenty of folks not get OTAs, even on fully stock devices, on the proper network/region, etc. It's not a perfect system.

The phone works doesn't it, just no OTAs?

I already asked that, but never really got a definitive answer, so just want to confirm you can boot to OS and use the phone.

nope still not past bootloop, cant use device other than bootloader, and recovery. nothing happens after flashing the img, except twrp deletes itself ofc. do you know a fix to this?

Okay, than you've spent far too much time going down the wrong road; and you've misunderstood big time. You can't get OTAs until the phone boots to OS. You can't get OTAs in bootloader or recovery, it simply doesn't work that way. You have to be able to boot into OS, then (if all goes well) you will either get a notification for an OTA updated, or you can check for updates in the phone's settings.

But back to the problem at hand. Never mind the OTAs. Let's just get the phone to boot first. First go to recovery, wipe data, Dalvik, cache and system. Then go to the Restore option in TWRP, and select to restore only system and boot (from the TWRP backup files you downloaded and copied to the phone). Then reboot, and see if it boots to OS. Don't restore the stock recovery, it's not needed to get the phone booted to OS (it's only needed to get the OTA update).

Keep in mind, it may be stuck on the HTC logo for a few minutes (5 min or so) on the first boot, so don't panic or reboot it, unless it gets stuck for longer.

i got high hopes
Well, I'm glad someone does, lol

Seriously, I wasn't sure if it would work or not. Although the process in the guide has been used successfully by many folks, so the process itself is quite sound. Therefore, I was hoping that simply wiping and starting over would work. Or possibly something left over in the "data" partition of the stock backup that was causing the no-boot situation (it's not needed to boot, so you don't really need to restore it).

Now that the phone is booting, you can just leave it be. Or if you like, restore the stock recovery and see if you get the OTA update.

Alternately, if you still want to root, flash TWRP 3.1.0, backup the stock ROM, then flash SuperSU 2.79.

didn't think it would work either lol. The screen wasn't booting up fast enough so i thought it was still in bootloop but the whole time boot was working, i just didnt wait long enough. oh, ill definitely be making a backup or two xD.
