if you need to restore it to H3G__001 (note cid is 8 characters, so not h3g_001, but H3G__001), then it'll take quite a few steps more as there is no ruu for H3G (as far as I know).

you can take a look at my guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541082

depends what you want to send the phone to repair as; just because you're with 3, doesn't necessarily mean it was 3uk branded, it could have been an international version.

so:
A) if you're going to send it in as international unbranded version, you check posts #1, #2, and #4 (ruu.zip method) using the 1.28.401.7 ruu.zip and setting cid to HTC__001

B) if you want to send it in as 3UK branded, then posts #1, #2, and #5 (CWM method), you'll need
* the 1.28.401.7 ruu.zip
* the H3G__001 nandroid
* probably this stock recovery: http://d-h.st/Vg2

everything else is mentioned in the guide, I recommend you stay S-Off, doesn't seem too much of an issue in the UK, but that's a decision only you can make.

the nandroid backup should be fine (unless it's a corrupt download), but it's definitely easier to use the unbranded method, so yes
1- set cid to HTC__001
2- set locked & untampered using whatever custom recovery you have now
3- flash the ruu.zip (twice), you can see a successful example output in post #8)
4- bootup once to make sure all is OK (do not take any OTAs if you intend on going S-On)
5- S-On is your decision

make sure to check MD5 on your downloads
