HTC Titan II drops cellular data connection randomly

I have spent some time discussing this with HTC and AT&T. Actually just got off the phone with HTC level 2.

I too have gone through all the options - new phone, new cover, new SIM card (you can just go into AT&T and ask for one, no charge), hard reset, everything.

From the information in this thread, and elsewhere I can say that the phone drops data on one of two things happening:-

- connection to tower is interrupted in current cell, but is re-acquired
- connection is handed off to adjacent tower as you travel to a new cell

Both these things will drop data IN 4G AREAS ONLY. If you are lucky enough to have consistent LTE in your area, you shouldn't have any problems.

Right now I'm working on getting the service menu codes so we can play with the radio settings. It sounds like HTC support reps have been forbidden to give these to end users on windows phone devices (I wonder why??!!).

If I get this information and it provides a fix for this issue, I will (obviously) post it, and I imagine HTC will as well. Here's hoping.....

Andy
Andy, you're a godsend.

Fwiw, after the LTE rollout, even a fallback to 4G in Detroit doesn't result in a data drop. I haven't needed to cycle the phone since the switchover.

Hi Guys,

writing this post just to share my Titan II "data issue" experience.
I often had data issue since the beginning forcing me to reboot the phone to get work data connection again...it was really really annoying, you know. I used to to switch wi-fi on/off, depending on the place where I was, to save battery(home, work) but I noticed that once avoided that switching I have no more data issue ! Last "data issue" has been long time ago
I hope my experience could be useful for someone here.

Sorry its taken me a while to get back here. Actually DrDon what you say makes perfect sense. After the LTE rollout your phone still occasionally falls-back to 4G - new connection, no problem there. Then it most likely switches back to LTE, again we know connections to LTE are not subject to the issue. Since you aren't going from 4G cell to another 4G cell, or losing and regaining signal in the same cell (I have this issue in one location in particular) you don't see the data loss issue.

Mik83 - the only thing I can guess from what you say is that you are bouncing from WiFi hotspot to hotspot. Or possibly that there was an LTE rollout while you weren't looking.

For info's sake: I got a new back cover from HTC - made absolutely no difference at all. HTC have now acceptably excluded any possible hardware malfunction they can imagine. They are settling on the likely issue of radio problems and have escalated to next support level. The problem is that this isn't a widespread problem. Not everyone with a Titan II will experience this, either because they live in LTE area, or because they don't move around much, or they just might not notice! We will have to wait and see what sort of priority they put on this.

So, I'm in Florida for the week and noticed something.

In Detroit, the status bar says "4G"
In Tampa, the status bar says "LTE"

As before, I have not lost cellular data connection since I landed in FL. Kind of rules out the battery cover as the issue is gone, here. It appears the issue goes away in LTE areas while it's present in areas yet to get LTE. Detroit's LTE rollout hasn't happened, yet. So, it appears I've got another month of suffering before the problem is rectified.

One other note. With Internet Sharing set to ON...
In Detroit, my wife's laptop connects to the phone and can get internet.
In Tampa, my wife's laptop connects to the phone, but cannot get internet. It gets the error msg: "your computer is trying to use a dns server that is incorrect or doesn't exist"

My laptop works flawlessly connecting to the phone's Internet Sharing both in Detroit and Tampa. For the life of me, I can't find anything different in her settings over mine. Both are Win7. Hers upgraded from Vista, mine x64 and new this fall. Also, two internet-capable televisions connect to the phone and get to the internet flawlessly. But something with LTE doesn't like my wife's computer. Odd.

Honestly, I adore everything about this phone except for the data connection issue in Detroit (and a few other areas, it seems).

There HAS to be a setting or SOMEthing I can tweak to get this thing to work in Detroit.
From what I found out after talking to a sales rep in Colorado Springs, where I live, is that 4G is more like an upgraded 3G network (with the same technology) and LTE is the fastest network that every place should be moving to...eventually. I might be able to shed some light to your problem since I am experiencing almost the same exact problem. When I am mobile (driving for more than a couple miles), my HTC Titan 2 will lose it's data connection every 10 minutes, or so. Only way to resolve it is to turn airplane mode on and off, or power cycling the device. In some remote places the phone will lose data about every 20 minutes or so, even if I am stagnant (this only happens when I am at my college campus). I had the phone replaced and am still having the issue. In Colorado, my phone displays 4G as well and the sales rep admitted that the LTE network in Colorado is not completely online yet so I think it's the networks in Colorado and Detroit. I asked someone in their warranty replacement department if I could just have another phone and he told me most all 4G phones are having the problem. We tried tweeking the APN settings so the phone connects to 3G only, but I am still having the data connection issue.

Hi Guys
We bought two Titans in June. Unfortunately they arrived AT&T branded - unlocked and we have the same problem of cellular connection being dropped every now and then.
We are in South Africa. Our Service provider has given us a Netgear celfi booster to improve the signal which it does, but this does not stop the cellualr connection being dropped. Should I play around with APN settings? How though? Thanks

It's fixed.

I went the expensive route and bought a L920. No more losing data. Too bad HTC couldn't release a simple fix before it was too late. Maybe the 7.8 update (if it ever arrives) will fix this phone.

Sadly, the sound on the T2 is much better then the 920. Maybe I'll use it as a small zune.

I can confirm I am experiencing the exact same issue on my sim unlcoked AT&T Titan 2 which I am using in the UK on O2.
4G is not available yet so I am using it on 3G, I have noticed that data connection freezes in certain time intervals and the only way to bring it back is to restart the phone (switching Airplane mode or data connection off and back on does not solve the problem).
I have also noticed that if I am using GPS navigation both GPS and data connections are lost at the same time and nothing beings them back other than restarting the phone.

It is also a shame that I could not use the HTC connection setup app as I get the error message 'Thecarrier is no in the database'.

Anyone can suggest any solution to this very annoying issue?

thanks in advance.

I did further testing on the phone, I have noticed that if I turn data connection off and use my offline navigation, the issue with disconnection and phone 'hanging' I mentioned above does not happen. Although the GPS is lost at some points, it easily reconnects which wasn't the case when the data connection was lost while using navigation.
I think the conclusion is that there is something wrong with the Radio of this phone, both GPS and data connections are freezing in fixed intervals probably when changing towers (relays) while driving or when switching between Wifi and 3G.
I hope this is fixed by AT&T or Microsoft in the 7.8 update.
