I've been flip flopping between the Mate 20 pro and the Pixel 3 XL. After looking at some other Huawei phone threads I've gotten the impression that there is a honeymoon period with a Huawei device at the start and then people get dissatisfied over it's life span due to a lack of support.
Any thoughts?

If you thought Samsung was slow to push updates Huawei gets the cake. A buddy of mine is a rep for Huawei and he himself admitted that Huawei doesn't have a 'Flagship' they just throw phones on the wall an hope they stick ? What I mean now that the Mate 20 pro is out their focus is on the next phone out. Doesn't bother me I don't usually keep phones for more than 3 months but average customers beware... ?

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought. I've had that reaction to Samsung phones. Amazing device at the start, with my impression souring as the months went by, and Nexus devices kept getting new features.

Side question. How does Netflix handle the notches on either phone? I've only seen screenshots for YouTube, not Netflix.

No Notch in Netflix. Handles it like any notchless phone. Hides the notch. Not sure if that's what you mean...

Well I was looking for a bit more detail. Like how the resizing is handled. Do you lose much screen space on top or bottom? HDR and motion support, sound quality for movies/tv, colour shift from edges

I was trying to do a screenshot to show you but it won't let me. I don't really Netflix on my phone much I usually do it on bigger screens. But it looks and sounds great as far as I can tell. Didn't really see much black crush. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the subject could chime in. ?

Hola
This is rather interesting. But I found that at least for official Huawei devices sold in Canada, they do for the most part a half decent job of at least providing security updates, obviously not at the frequency of Pixel phones, but decent enough all things considered. Take a look at Fido device OS upgrade page: https://forums.fido.ca/t5/custom/page/page-id/forumpage.osupgradesen and you'll see that for most Huawei phones, they are reasonably well updated at least within the past 3 months or so. Samsung seems to have really cleaned up their act this year and most of their devices are within 2 months of having the latest monthly security updates.

Now when it comes to Android OS major version releases then they all suck eggs again except for Pixel phones. LG and Huawei for sure at the worst offenders!

That aside, I still believe I will be buying the Mate 20 Pro over the next 2 days. I'll be closely monitoring my screen to see if I get green hue crap, fingers crossed. I was just waiting to see if Fido will be offering any significant discounts for this Black Friday.

I raised a ticket on Huawei Canada's support website and one of their reps reached out to me to tell me I can either go through my carrier or mail/go to their rep in my area which is futuretel in Markham. They guarantee to take care of this problem. Not sure if the rep can actually guarantee this and they mentioned we can find out there first if they will be giving a new one altogether or just replacing the screen

To be honest, I've put my mate 20 back in the box and bought a oneplus 6T which I quite like, especially with the GCAM port. I'm just waiting on Telus to send me a replacement device but I get the feeling I'm going to be doing this a whole lot until I get a working screen...if the oneplus could do VOLTE etc with Telus I'd probably just keep it. As it stands if I ever get a working Mate 20 Pro, I'll use the oneplus for work

Although, I'm not a canadian. But still, I got the Bell's variance of the phone. They even gave me a Huawei watch 2 and a free case as gifts. However, as a Chinese, I noticed that the Chinese version which called Mate 20 pro UD have 8gb of ram. Which is kinda sad considering the price were almost the same.

I pre ordered the device and 12 days ago, I asked Telus for a replacement device, because I had the green screen issue. The guy told me over the phone to expect the exchange envelope with the new device in 7 to 10 days. Today, I still didn't get the new device and still no news from Telus about the tracking number. I so assume it is still now shipped. I called Telus again, I got to talk to the exact same guy. He said to me that they were BO at the warehouse and to expect the new device to be shipped in 2-3 days.

I am happy to have called and placed the "order" before the Black Friday, so I am at the top of the shipping pile, but I don't know how I should feel about the fact that the device was "BO". I wonder if it is BS and Telus simply didn't want to ship anything while Canada Post was still on strike and waiting to resolution or if they were really BO and the new batch would be green-screen free!

Maybe they sold all devices or maybe they pulled the stocks because of the screen problem, but I still can't find any statement online about how they handle the screen situation.

Just picked up my Rogers pre-order and lucked out with a BOE screen with a B serial number. So these do exist in Canada. Good luck everyone else with winning the screen lotto and getting replacements!

You know what's really weird? Though the screen uniformity hasn't improved at super low brightness.. any green I had from the edges from before is gone after 3 weeks or use. Admittedly I didn't have much to begin with but it's actually gone.
Still rather have a BOE screen though of course but I'm not minding the LG screen at the moment too. Hope it doesn't come back.

How's the screen uniformity of the BOE screen when looking at dark grey in 0% brightness?

Hola
Received my Mate yesterday. I am with Fido. And I am smiling since I found out that I got a BOE screen. It is indeed a beautiful device with a gorgeous display. As everyone has said the sucky part is really with EMUI - some useful features but goes it is missing some key functionality especially when you are part of the techy crowd.

How can you have AOD with no support for third party app notifications?! Gestures are flimsy from the little I am using it. And Notification controls / status bar icons are absolute sh!t in my opinion.

My phone's starting to show green on both sides. Returning it tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'm gonna get a replacement or just get my money back and order the X. But spending $1468 on this I can't accept this.
I ordered the X (EVR-L29) and couldn't be happier. Same great specs, but a larger screen with 0 of the green screen issue. Plus it's cheaper too!

If anyone else is interested, I ordered from Splendor, and it was such a great experience. Had it in my hand within 2 days from Hong Kong!

That's good to hear! Thanks! Anyone else got a BOE screen? I've been holding on to my LG Hulk phone (since the problem is pretty mild on my unit) hoping to get a BOE replacement at the end of the 30 day window.

I'm sorry but how can we confirm if we have an LG screen or BOE screen?

Mine just came in the mail today from Rogers. So far no issues, but I have no idea how to check the panel type.

Finally figured it out. Mine is a BOE panel; I ordered it through Rogers on Black Friday. As I mentioned, so far no issues with the screen, but I've only used it lightly for a day. Fingers crossed because I really love the phone so far.
