Anyone else having issues with this recovery?

Either backing up to the normal SD card or my External SD card in the backup and recovery options leave PhilZ to freeze for five seconds or so, let the screen go black, then just take me back to the menu.

I can't seem to make this thing do a backup. Strange?

MJ9 stock-based ROM and firmware (properly rooted, etc)

Edit: it's more like 7 seconds, then nothing happens.

Do I need to format my sdcard and external sdcard as a certain format? My external is fat32.

I just don't want to make the move to 4.4.2 without doing a backup!

Edit2:

So I installed the latest normal CWM Touch, and was able to do a backup.

When I went to Wipe Data, the screen hangs for several minutes, and the phone spontaneously reboots into Recovery again, with no warning or record of what happened.

I go flash Phil's again (since I'm satisfied with backup), and normal /sdcard/ has a few weird folders in it now and a /0/ directory with all of what the internal storage USED to have. Strange? I flash PhilZ, boot into PhilZ, and wipe data..

Same thing. It hangs and reboots into recovery again. I boot into normal system to verify that data was wiped (it seemed to be), so I went and flashed the new ROM and radio (4.4.2 stock rooted). Oddly, my Google account, and wi-fi hotspot information are still inputted into the phone. Not sure how I feel about it.
I had this happen awhile ago with a earlier clockwork recovery, I think. I believe that the only fix is to Odin back to stock. If I remember correctly it had to do with certain "blocks" becoming corrupted.

I stumbled across a post this weekend that said trying a stock recovery may work because it does clear the block correctly and custom recoveries only clear the headers of the blocks. Sorry I don't have a reference link to give, but it is worth searching and giving it a try.

with the latest philz 6.41.6, I'm experiencing issue where it won't restore my 4.3 ROM that I just backed up. it'd give me error reading tmp/boot.img.md5 md5 verification failed ... anyone on the same boat?

I did see that one time. I just chose the option to NOT verify md5 and it restored fine.

Haven't seen it since then.

Great, this is why you don't restore things at 5 in the morning. I got pissed and deleted my backups .... lol, I'll give this a try next time. Thanks!

Thanks for the info.

I trusted the wiping and flashed 4.4.2 anyway, to find out that every time I install an app, my data is already in place. And in Downloaded apps, ALL of my previous apps (old rom before wiping) are listed, but with no icons and 0 bytes.

My phone is completely functional with no real issues, but I'll be going through that process for sure to clean up when I move on from this ROM. Man, so strange!

Is the lastest Philz 6.48.4? Is this working fine for everyone? Not only stock/rooted roms but the CM's, Akops. Slims, all data, service and the works all good?

I suspect one of your partitions is corrupt. I have had this problem intermittently since 4.4.2 and TWRP (although I use Philz now).
It is most likely the data partitton. If you have adb installed on your PC you can boot into recovery and from an adb shell type "fsck /dev/block/mmcblk0p16" and see if finds any errors. Do not attempt this while running normally as /data is mounted.

So I have a i605 (VZ Note 2 16gb) running on stock MJ9 firmware 4.3 and it is rooted.

I cannot get philz to install either from the SD card or ODIN.

The errors I get are NAND write fails. See attached....

Any ideas??

1. You can't flash a custom recovery zip from within stock recovery. Try with Odin with tar.md5.
2. If you have completely stock MJ9 firmware, then you have a locked bootloader and can not install a custom recovery.
