ICS - Deep Sleep issue... Related to Charging?

I've seen similar comments on this, but not necessarily the same issue I'm seeing...

As with many issue's with the ICS install, this is one of those where it "suddenly" began with no explanation as to why when previously everything was working fine. I have two Skyrockets and one started to experience this while the other did not... then suddenly, just as though an internal timer had been set, it also began to experience the same issue. I will add that the second phone is my test phone and has nothing installed other than what came with the original ROM.

SUMMARY:
Initially my battery life was awesome, but then suddenly saw a huge drop off; I confirmed it to be a problem with the phone not entering a deep sleep state; obviously I began looking to see what app may be causing this, disabling services, putting phone in airplane mode, etc.... nothing resolved it and as far as I could determine there was nothing unusual about any app running... a reboot ALWAYS resolved the problem.

ANALYSIS:
I determined that making a connection to any charging source "triggered" the issue... Using CPU Spy I could confirm that the phone would enter Deep Sleep mode; I did this multiple times (resetting timers) without fail. I then plugged in the phone to the charging source (I've tested both the power block and USB connection), waited until the phone detected the source then unplugged the cable. I then repeated the same steps to confirm Deep Sleep using CPU Spy and this time, the phone would never enter Deep Sleep, but instead would only drop down to 384MHz.... once again a reboot will resolve the issue until the next time a power source is plugged in.

One note to mention, on one of my phones, I have to charge it to 100% before it exhibits the issue while the other will always see the issue regardless of battery level.

I have also confirmed this to occur with a default install of ICS; no apps installed, etc. Is anyone else experiencing a similar situation and if so, any ideas as to what may causing the problem?

If you read my post, I didn't say I was expecting it to sleep when plugged in, I said, plugging in a power source triggered the problem. I then remove the cable and re-confirm whether the phone is not able to enter a Deep Sleep state...

The phone doesn't sleep when plugged in

Is wifi involved?

I think i see the same issue here. after a reboot battery life is better. next day battery life short. Phone will not go in to deep sleep. Is there an easy way to trouble shoot deep sleep issues?

WiFi and GPS are off for me.

Wifi doesn't appear to make a difference as one phone is in airplane mode while the other is my daily phone. I do have it shutting off wifi when sleeping.

Again, to reiterate, the issue is seen ONLY AFTER connecting the phone to any power source... even if for only a few seconds. Until this connection is made, the phone will ALWAYS enter Deep Sleep.

Very easy to test:

1. Using an app to monitor CPU states (I used CPU Spy), I reset timers and put phone into sleep mode (hitting power button).... wait a few seconds to allow the timers to populate.

2. Bring phone out of sleep mode (press power button) and confirm CPU states... In this case, Deep Sleep is the majority of the time, with some usage seen on 384MHz

3. Connect power source, let phone detect it, then UNPLUG cable. At this point, phone is not charging.

4 Using app, confirm CPU states; in my case it shows various speeds used (majority 384) but Deep Sleep is no longer seen and listed as an unused state

5. Just to confirm, reset timers again, put phone to sleep, let sit a few seconds to allow timers to populate.

6. Confirm CPU states again, once again, Deep Sleep state is NOT used and listed under unused CPU states.

7. Reboot phone and repeat steps 1 & 2 and you will again see the phone is able to enter Deep Sleep state.

Is wifi involved?

Got me thinking on this and it reminded me of the troubleshooting we were doing with the battery getting stuck at 100%...

Although I've tested this with multiple chargers, cables, etc.... I just tested using a very short USB cable I have, approx. 8" or so. Good news, it appears to "reset" whatever is causing the problem and I now get my Deep Sleep state back. I also re-tested this same setup with the OEM USB cable (which I already done), but still still the problem. So, something about the short cable is different; guessing signal impedance or something similar.

Various cables and source; e.g. power block and/or USB connected to PC. It would appear, as far as I can tell, that any power source "triggers" something to prevent it from entering a Deep Sleep state.

At the house i have a 5 inch cable. I will test with that later tonight. Glad you made a post about this. It was driving me crazy. Maybe its a work around. It sure would be nice to figure out what is causing this issue so that all cables work.

Glad things are working for you, are you rooted? This would be the only scenario I've not tested.

To clarify, everything was working fine for me for awhile on two phones, then suddenly this issue surfaced. I've reinstalled, wiped cache, etc with no resolution... Although the short cable work around resolves the issue, I travel 100% of the time for work and don't want to have to worry about battery life, so I've gone back to 2.3.6 (Nexus4) and no longer experience the problem.

I'm rooted. And just installed rr's kernel with tweaks. I'm going to see how that affects battery. If battery doesn't improve, I'm going back to GB until it's improved. I can't stand bad battery.

I'm running a rooted I flashed with the OneClick .exe and rooted it. My phone is entering deep sleep even after being plugged in. I am using the charger that came with my Nexus One with the OEM Dock. I will test it again at work where I use the same charger without the dock and see if it changes.

The short cable does seem to do something. I have two longer cables and after using one of those the phone will not go to deep sleep until a reboot. below is what i am using.

[ROM] MHX-SUPERLITE-3.1 Stable *Latest UCLA3 Base* ~Get Longer Battery Life~
Kernel]Skyrocket[2.6.35.14](010)OC~1.73GHz/GPU OC/OTG/UV/SLQB/BLN[Mar-09]

Just check at work. Phone will still go into Depp sleep after charging with the charger that came with my HTC Nexus One. I have not tried cgarging it with the cable and AC / USB converter that came with it.

Update on this issue....

I did a Darkside wipe to see if I could clean things up and while all issue's I was experiencing, such as power off/reboot hang, etc have been resolved, I still see this issue when I do not use a Samsung charger (power block) of any kind.

I can now easily reproduce this issue 100% using an Apple power block with the OEM cable. The good news is, I no longer need to use my short USB cable connected to my PC (Mac) to correct the problem; if I simply use the OEM power block it will also reset the problem... very strange behavior.

They had a problem similar to this over in the at&t Note forum. The phone would not enter deep sleep after charging. They were able to enable deep sleep by turning on the screen before unplugging the phone from the charger. It wasn't a real fix but it allowed deep sleep to happen every time. Maybe you are having a similar issue with your kernel. Hope this helps.
