General IDOING UIS7862 with WRX[Updated with initial review]

Hello everyone,

I am new here and have this UIS7862 head unit on my 2016 WRX (no HK). I can't seem to find any other forum on the internet besides this one about this particular unit so my apologies if something about the way I'm posting this is violating some etiquette in some way, but it seems like a number of different things are being addressed in this same thread so here's one more...

I have been having an issue as of late that I cannot figure out what is causing it and I'm going mad trying to figure it out. When the unit first wakes from sleep, there is a glitch on the bottom of the display (see photo). Sometimes it goes away within a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes, and sometimes it just remains there until I do a full reboot. It never used to do this. I have been in touch with iDoing (I just installed this in May) and they are wanting to send me a new display to swap out. I'm reluctant to do this as I'm questioning if I can even remove this thing from the dash without breaking something. It was scary enough having to push it in so hard to install it. Also, I'm not convinced the issue isn't software related, however, and they don't even seem willing to troubleshoot that route. I think they are trying to be helpful, but the language barrier is a major inhibition. Anyhow, the affected area of the display still is showing SOMETHING (not dead or stuck pixels), it's just as though the screen weren't calibrated for the display size or something, but it's definitely working and I can see it update as the rest of the screen changes. I have been working around this for the time being by disabling the sleep feature in settings so that each time I turn the car on it does a full boot. When doing a full boot, everything loads normally without the display issue, every time. I'd like to be able to us the sleep setting though, as I always used to, since it's much faster. I have tried doing a factory reset to no avail. I actually question if the factory reset even works correctly as there were a number of system settings that somehow remained how I had set them after the reset. It also seems to do this regardless of what launcher I'm running (either stock or Car Launcher Pro). So with that background, here are a few questions I have:

1) Is there any other way to do a factory reset besides from the system settings like I've tried? Maybe from recovery? If anyone even knows how to get into recovery on this thing?

2) Can you think of any setting or app that would cause an issue like this?

3) Is there anywhere to check for software updates for this thing? I have asked iDoing and they won't answer that question, which is very frustrating. If these things are known to be buggy I don't understand why there is no OTA update ability or at least a clearly designated site to find the latest...

Any other comments/thoughts/suggestions/snarks are welcome.

Sorry about your unit. I would definitely suspect this is either a display or connector cable issue. Like you already did, I'd do a factory reset first, but if you did that and IDoing is willing to send you a new display then I'd definitely have them do that. I nderstand your concern with removing the unit(I haven't had to yet), but honestly the only thing you're going to damage removing it is the display. I'd start popping the clips around the screen first, then the botton, then the top. Once you have it out I suspect the display will be easy replace, tho I am not sure how it is "glued"? into the bezel.

Sorry I haven’t had a chance to get on here and get back to you. So I ended up just exchanging the entire head unit (display and radio itself, less the frame and accessories). iDoing had me send it back and sent me the new one soon as I showed them the tracking number for the one I returned, and I had the new one in about 1 week, which was pretty fast. For reference, I included some photos of how this thing is attached on the back side. Construction is actually higher quality than anticipated. There is no glue, there are 4 screws attaching the unit to the display, and then another 4 attaching the display to the frame/trim that mounts into the car. Also attached photos of how the display connects to the radio – there’s just a single ribbon connector. Removing the unit wasn’t too terrible. The key is to have a second set of hands and some plastic trim removal tools. I started at the top (that was easy) then started working at the two middle clips near the top of the display. Those are where the tight fit is. I had to press on both VERY hard to get the clip to release (they are very stiff clips), but they did release and I’m happy to report there is no marking of any kind on my dash or the head unit frame where the tools were forced in. That soft touch dash material bounces back just fine. Anyhow, the new unit has been working swell for the past week and a half. It does not have the issue the other unit had, thankfully. My other unit didn’t have it from the start either though, so really hoping it’s not a ticking time bomb. Also included some photos showing software and MCU version. Both are newer than the previous unit you will see if you compare to my previous post (especially the MCU). It could be in my head, but I do think it seems to run smoother than the other one. Also worth noting the collection of factory UI’s available are slightly different. There’s a couple new ones I didn’t have before, some old ones I did, and some of the old ones I liked are not there. Does anyone know if it is possible to extract those APK’s from an iDoing update archive? I happen to have an update file from my previous unit, but I only want those launcher APK’s since the update is actually older than the version the new unit has. Figured if I had the APK’s I could just install them as any other app (maybe I’m wrong about that since it wouldn't have system level permissions?). I have explored the archive, but do not see any APK extensions, I’m guessing it has to be compiled somehow from the .bin files or something like that? Any ideas on that would be really appreciated. I can share a link to the archive if interested.

On an unrelated/yet somewhat related note – has anyone found a good spot to put their external mic/ had any luck with BT calls? My wife tells me I sound distant and at times there are lots of road noise. I have it mounted right on top of the steering column facing me. Any way to adjust mic gain on this thing? Also, call volume is pretty low on my end and I have to crank up to like 20 or more to hear someone while driving, although quality is OK. I already have BTPhone cranked all the way up in the Volume Balance Settings in Factory Settings.

One other incidental thing I’ll mention because I discovered it by accident and may be useful to others - if while reversing you tap on the display, a menu comes up where you can adjust image color and brightness, but you can also adjust/calibrate the reverse lines! It even has two different styles/themes for the appearance. Finally got mine looking normal as it didn’t look right at all out of the box and was useless.

I ran my mic under the dash and mounted it on top of the steering column ion the instrument cluster. Can't really see it unless you're looking for it. Rarely make calls in the car, but the voice recognition seems ok as long as the music is at reasonable levels.

Does anyone know of a GPS app I can install that doesn't require my mobile data to be connected? The head unit came with an app that seemed to work but I had to reset it and lost the app. Currently the only way I can use GPS via the head unit is connecting my cell phone to it or use downloaded/offline maps.

The FytHWOneKey was written for the sc9853i/PX5/Sofia3GR. I am now adding functionality for the uis7862 as well as some "LAUNCH" activities have changed. At least for the radio app. But my uis7862 is still in transit (for quite long already. I already sent a mail to the reseller), so I can't test myself yet and stopped temporarily.

I'm having a really weird issue where the steering wheel buttons only work after the car has been running for a few minutes. If I reprogram them as soon as I start the car, they work fine but then stop working after a few minutes. I'm not even sure if this is an issue with the unit or just the car electrics. Even with the stock unit, the steering wheel buttons would randomly stop working once in a while and I'd have to restart the unit for the buttons to work again. Anyone experience this?

That happens because of the temperature, I believe. It has happened to others and it happens to me. I have resistive buttons and from what I read, and it kind of makes sense, the resistance changes in colder / hotter temperatures. It usually affects one or two of my buttons more than the others. After the interior has warmed up a bit, it goes back to normal and all works better. Only happens in really cold weather, though. I remember reading something that suggested it's because the resistive values are too close together. The resistance values is how the head units know which button has been pressed. I remember reading about someone who put additional resistors somewhere in the path and that helped or solved the issue. I can't find it again and I gave up looking for it.

Temperature effects on resistance makes sense.

I have bigger problems now though. The unit just died out of nowhere--lost power completely and doesn't turn back on. The Audio Amp fuse looks fine and so does the fuse at the back of the unit. Idoing says I can ship it back to them for a replacement, which I may end up doing.

Got it to the point of plugging it in to test in the car.

Adding Heating controls vents was a Piece of Cake and this thing looks amazing

Screen: Fast and gorgeous responsive, seems very good in bright sunlight

capacitive buttons:, work well , Reset and reprogrammed and much better. Also Illumination is working with custom colors.

Well Documented low volume buzz... Yep it's there, goes away if you mute the radio. Will look for setting to reduce perhaps as well as talk to IDoing

Harman Kardon Canbus, Works plug and play. One issue that may be related is the Fade controls don't really work to fade to rear as they mute the rear, while balance controls work fine... Talking to IDoing now and they just confirmed that any factory amp radio has this issue.

Wifi 5ghz tether, works flawlessly, get 50mbit off my cell. Not the fastest but more than good enough

Play store/google account setup: works flawlessly. Have installed several apps already

Waze/GPS: works flawlessly

USB: 3 dongles, all work for USB Drives, haven't tested for phone connection

Flac: Works off all 3 usb(one main reason I went with this unit)

4g: Working well with t-mobile, not working with verizon. Verizon shows as full bars, bars when I went more urban, but there are no APN settings and I cant get data to work.

Bluetooth audio: works ok, sound doesn't seem fantastic, but i will probably never use.

Android Auto: Wired works great, can't get wireless to work even though my phone says the head unit supports it. Wired it's very fast and responsive and looks great.

Carplay: works wired and woreless, didn't test much as I don't use apple except for app testing.

Fubo/Video: Works very well screen is gorgeous

Developer options: IDoing gave me codes

Launcher: Pretty flexible with different options.

Got USB Debugging, ADB to work today. In developer setting there is 3 "..." at the top, in there is USB mode, top is host mode, bottom is device mode(ADB).

Once I got ADB going I got SystemUITuner granted permissions to control immersive mode for Waze and the like.

Custom Launcher: Got custom launchers working with a trick to use the setting in Nova to set default launcher. Now Rocking Car Web Guru launcher. Also Like Car Launcher Free Version.

Split screen : woks well and is even remembered as last view on soft boot.

Geekbench: 500+, 1300+ very pleased.

android auto with Head unit reloaded: tested with dev server method. Works well with wireless, but UI layout is pretty bad.

Console USB Adapter: Bought from amazon, works perfectly. Now 4 functioning USB

USB access for File Manager : doesn't work yet

Music Apps: do have access to USB

Automation: Used Macrodroid to start Android auto whenever the phone usb is plugged in, or to start spotifiy if no usb and wifi connects. Will do some more of these.

Overall:
Bummed about the rear speaker control, will have to see how much it affects my listening, found subwoofer control an tweaked EQ, sound is quite nice, still wish fade worked. Ok next note to others, make sure you calibrate your EQ with your back seats up. I forgot I had put them down to get my bike in and that was half my disappointment with the sound. Yes I still wish I had fade, but this thing sounds Really nice once dialed in.

The buzz is "irritating" that it exists, but unlikely a real issue for me.. Totally inaudible when car is running.
Otherwise this thing is pretty sweet so far.

I plugged the starlink back in and i contacted them and they basically said the same thing they had no idea.... I looked online and not much documentation .... Speakers were fine prior and get sounds when i fade to them just not at the same level.... gonna pull it out again and reseat everything

After a lot of reviews and reading I just ordered a 9" Idoing with CanBus for my 2018 WRX with Harman Kardon. A lot of positive reviews from WRX owners, but not seeing a lot of love(or hate) for the Idoing hear on XDA. It's nearly identical to the Joying, but Joying will not support the HK system in my car.

I'm curious what custom options I have in terms of UI, ROMs, Root,, apps?
I'm guessing from what I read(or lack there of) ROMs are a no go, but what about root and other customization options?

Sorry long time rooter and custom ROM user for android phones and tablets, but total noob to android head units.

I have a Kenwood with wireless android auto in my old car and was going to move it to this one, but absolutely hate Android Auto almost as much as I hate mirrorlink in the stock HU in my WRX(shame on you subaru). Also the kit to install it from crutchfield cost nearly as much as the android unit and canbus shipped from china, so figured i'd take a chance.

If it doesn't work out I'll go with the kenwood, but really hopeful this will be a winner. I spent a lot of time on chat with them and they are extremely responsive to questions(really like live chat) where a question to Joying took 3 days to get a response.

I know there is little chance the 4G module will work in the US(IDoing says it works with tmobile) so expecting to use wifi tether with my phone with native apps and pretend android auto doesn't exist. Other option is put a spare phone with sim permanently connected to USB, but unsure if USB tether will work.

I will keep reading, but any thoughts or pointers are welcome. Just don't tell me to replace my HK system, I know not everyone likes it, but I love it ;-)

Did you ever get a sim card to work? I'm fighting with t-mobile now to turn on the sim card but there telling me the unit is locked. I see no way of unlocking it.

Only with T-Mobile, yes had no issue with T-Mobile(Mint Mobile) but never any luck with verizon.

I just recently got one for the 2020 sti and I cant seem to get android auto wireless to connect reliably, any tips/recommendations? Bluetooth connected and wifi connected to the headunit with no internet, to get it to connect i would disconnect and reconnect the bluetooth

There really is no fix except to use the optical out. After a year I don't even hear it anymore.
