Can I root or downgrade?
There's a Google Sheet with Firmware versions and downgrading and rooting info.
Discussion about the Google Sheet

Fire OS 5.3.1.0 was the last rootable version for all Fires,
except the HD 10.
Do not attempt to downgrade. - 7th Oct 2018

Fire OS 5.3.1.0 can be rooted but not rolled back.
http://xdaforums.com/amazon-fire/help/installing-custom-rom-fireos-5-3-1-0-t3418541

5.1.4, 5.1.3 and 5.1.2.1 cannot be rooted (31 May 2016)
but both can be downgraded to 5.1.2 (see restore firmware with stock recovery)

5.1.2 can be rooted by Kingroot

Kingroot thread KingRoot thread
then see rootjunky's supersume video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O3DcpeS_Ic
or manually install supersu with a terminal emulator
http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html

Word of caution: do NOT reboot after running SuperSume; device will soft brick. Immediately start FlashFire and proceed with rom install. This condition does not apply when using Root Junky's approach/tool to replace KingUser with SuperSU. Also note SuperSU is a prerequisite for using FlashFire on FireOS.

Root System Version 5.1.2
6 April 2016: Currently System Version 5.1.2 Root with
Kingroot Root thread KingRoot thread
then see rootjunky's supersume video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O3DcpeS_Ic
or see Rootjunky's Super Tool thread (Windows/Mac/Linux)
Note: If the Kingroot 4.x app repeatedly fails around the 30% mark, try Restoring firmware in Stock recovery.

Root System Version 5.1.1
Root System Version 5.0.0 & 5.0.1

All System Versions Requires Root

Custom Recovery 5.0.0 & 5.0.1 Only

UnRoot
  • The Fire can be Unrooted, using the SuperSu app, which is installed in the rooting process. Unrooting is not the same as Restoring Stock Firmware

Unbrick/Restore Firmware with a Custom Recovery

Restore Firmware / UnBrick / Downgrade using Stock Recovery/ADB Sideload

Unbrick with Python's pyserial module

Internal USB port

I'm thinking the internal USB was likely an aborted attempt to add NFC functionality the this thing. I'm wanting to build a case to add 2 external USB host ports without adding more than a half an inch or so to the depth. This should also let me add a secondary battery to the unit. If the internal usb is device only I might be able to bring that out and just use it for charging and connecting to my PC.
