There are a few options for updating (Non-OTA)

RSD Lite (using Windows XP/7)
Remove This line from flash_file.xml with Notepad++ then save
Code:
<step operation="erase" partition="userdata"/>
LMSA (Update option or Rescue)
The update option does not wipe data
Fastboot.exe
Just do not use this command
Code:
fastboot erase userdata
LMSA is the easiest option if you have a Windows PC

Changing Software channel

(ro.carrier)

Some reasons for changing the Channel are because the
current channel
  • Doesn't include Google Framework (Playstore)
  • Has lots of bloatware.
  • Doesn't support the carrier you want to use
  • Hasn't been updated

Caution
Most Motorola devices have several sub-models. (XTxxxx-1, XTxxxx-2, XTxxxx-ds...)
If the current channel and the new channel are the same sub-model.
There shouldn't be any issues but

Your devices hardware may not compatible with other sub-model firmware
for the following reasons
  • Does not support NFC
  • Single or Dual Sim card support
  • Other hardware differences

Caution
Unlock the Bootloader If you do not unlock the bootloader
  • Best case the firmware will not install
  • Worst case the device will become unusable and unfixable.

These instructions work well with Qualcomm Devices, if your device has a MediaTek Chip this may not work.

In many cases, the Software Channel can be changed with the following steps.

Windows PC Instructions

(If you do not have a Window machine see fastboot.exe thread for flashing commands)
  • Unlock the bootloader (You will lose user data when it's unlocked)

  • Install LMSA

  • Confirm your Device's Product Name, and channel in LMSA
  • Download the current firmware with LMSA,
  • Move the current firmware to a different folder

  • Find your devices Codename (the codename should be in the folder name of the downloaded firmware)
  • Search for your devices Codename at Lolinet or Moto Update Tracker

  • Download the different Channel Firmware
  • Unzip the Firmware
  • Rename the new channel firmware folder to the same name as the firmware folder downloaded with LMSA
  • Move the renamed firmware folder to ProgramData\LMSA\Download\RomFiles
