I fail to see the purpose of a rooted chromecast anymore. Can anyone explain what you can do with a rooted chromecast that you can't do with a normal one. I could see the point of wanting local playback before but we've had it for a while now.

Custom whitelist (ie, use other apps-in-development like Vbukit) and change DNS...

Hi all, im having a lot of problems trying to root my chromecast. I've followed all the instructions and am using a Teensy 2++ with the Y splitter (bought one and also made one)

The serial for the Chromecast starts with 4217 and SKU starts with GA3A. (new in the box and never updated)

Ive connected the Teensy to the Y connector first and depending on which Flash I use I either get an orange light on it or no light. Then holding the reset button on the Chromecast I connect it to the Y connector. I get a solid red light on the Chromecast but no flashing flights on the Teensy. The TV says "Chromecast.com/startupissues" but if I put it in the tv on its own it goes to start-up screen ok.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Try powering the Teensy and Y cable before you attempt to plug it into the CCast. That was what worked for me.

Also make sure you release the button on the CCast at the first sign of a LED Lighting up...The Teensy should then start blinking.
If not try again!

I tried that not still not working, is the Teensy supposed to have a light on when first plugged in or should it be off to start of with?

Rooted a 3A191xxxx first attempt. Never updated the unit. Used the Teensy 2.0++ .This was an old test unit I was messing with.

How I did it.
Followed directions that were posted.

1 downloaded the Teensy programing app and programmed the slow and fast blink file offered with the programing software. Reboot using app pressed sync button on Teensy and then programmed with the file for a New CC and the ++ Teensy

2 plugged CC into TV with its extension cabel , plugged USB into TV port, and Teensy 2.0++ into OTG cable and connected it to CC. There is no USB power and CC and Teensy have no pepper at this point.

3 pressed button on CC and held down while connecting power (other end of USB) into OTG power in.

4 released button on CC apx 1.5 seconds after it powered up and the Teensy light was on. Teensy began to flash (just like instructions said).

5 after light on Teensy went solid and light responded like noted in instructions on the CC I removed ONLY the Teensy connected the USB drive that was flashed with the flash cast bin supplied with root in Hubcap folder. Pressed CC button briefly and CC began to root.

6 logged into CC web panel and confirmed root.

All is good :)

When I power on the CC with or without the Teensy attached and hold the reset button for more than 1.5 seconds the Red solid light comes on it and it goes to the something has went wrong screen. With the Tennsy attached the orange light comes on right away when power is added and does not flash at any time.

I tried the instructions above without any success, thanks for trying. Has anyone any more ideas what is happening. I have tried this with 3 brand new CC's all SKU: GA3A00030A23 with serials starting with 421.

Starting to pull my hair out with these things as everyone else seems to be getting it working ok.

Which .hex file are you using? The instructions say that you should use plusplus_ 12940.hex, but for my new in box device I had to use plusplus_ 16664.hex.

Hi, i had the same issue. Before going crazy I gave up and updated the device with the last version from Google.

The root procedure for non-new chromecasts worked afterwards.

My intuition was that not all versions sold worldwide are sold with the same firmware version.

Note that I purchased my chromecast on amazon France last week (French box). The serial starts with 4110.

Let me know if it helps.

I rooted 3 today, 2 brand new oob and one that I have been using. Power up the Teensy and THEN you plug in the Chromecast. Push button once on the CC and then wait for the teensy to flash, when it has gone solid white. Remove the Teensy and stick the flashdrive loaded with flashcast. Press button on CC and then wait until solid white. DONE

I'm guessing I slipped up by being interested in rooting my device moments after I looked up to realize it was finished updating... I have a chromecast running firmware 19084. Am I SOL?
