To restore my back up of stock 6.0.1 from custom 7.1.1 using twrp, do i need to wipe anything? I am stuck at boot logo when i tried to restore my back up after wiping system, data and cache. I tried to return to stock from custom 7.1.1. Where did I go wrong?
Boot into twrp...then wipe system dalvik data cache and/or internal storage....then flash your backed up 6.0.1 stock ROM...now every thing will be fine...

I did that. I wiped system, data, dalvik cache and then restore the back up. But it was stucked at the motorola M logo. Do I need to wipe the internal storage too?

It's not necessary...but u can try wiping it...at the time of backing up what are the things did u backed up??

I think and I surely know if you back up correctly and then flash a clean restore than it will surely boot up...

And if it still stuck on the m screen then either be patient and wait some time or switch off the phone and restart ..

I backed up data, system & partition. I waited for like 15 minutes, the screen goes dark, then light up, then dark, light up...so on. And the back up I did was after I did factory reset, so the internal was like almost empty. But now, there are lots of things in the internal memory. Can this be a problem?

Btw, I didn't switch off and restart but tried to reboot system again from the recovery but still stucked.

Just start fresh...wipe everything except ext.storage...then restore the backup...wait patiently or watch a TV series ,u will not feel bore then? ....then if it doesn't start after a while Then switch off..it will auto restart..

Follow these and thank me later..?

Haha...OK, I'll try it. And one more thing, will I be able to update the recent OTA after this, with the bootloader still unlocked and custom recovery present?

U can update via ota as long as following is present
1.stock recovery
2.stock kernel(kernel bundled with stock ROM)
3.Stock ROM
4.Unlocked / Locked bootloader

So...to answer your question..as u have custom recovery installed. The answer is a big NO

One thing u can try if u are really eager to get the ota...first go complete stock by the process mentioned in the op...then u have a stock recovery and a locked / unlocked bootloader (as the firmware image is old bootloader will not be locked I assume)...after that u will get the ota and the latest security patch..update the ota..again flash custom recovery...thats it..

Is there any hope of adding a newer build of the factory image: Retail US (2GB) - XT1540_OSPREY_RETUS_2GB_6.0_MPI24.65-25.1_cid9
Or should I assume that this is the last factory image that is gonna be released?

No.. @lost101 said water in the well is not dried yet...so keep finger crossed...

Also u can flash the old images that are in the thread...only thing u can't do is to lock the bootloader by them...but with an unlocked bootloader everything will be same

No upload of a firmware from Motorola for sometime

I seen that firmware.center is not going to give an option to download Motorola firmware till June 1st. Hence there will be no upload of firmware also I think so:confused::crying:

That's not what they are saying. The website has run out of bandwidth and cannot allow downloads for the time being. Firmware.center has no control over when Motorola firmware images are publicly available. That's not a criticism; they never claimed otherwise.

All you can do is wait, and maybe pray to the firmware Gods.
