I can confirm that from the available Firmware Images, where a 1gb and 2gb version exists - the Kernels are different. This applies to both Android 5.1.1 and Android 6.0. build.props may also differ. The differences most likely relate to the amount of RAM available as hardware is otherwise identical.

In which case I could seriously use the 2gb UK f/w right about now. L preferably. Wish I'd never unlocked a 2 week old phone's bootloader tbh. Just want fully legit M when it arrives. Would love root with locked bootloader but afaik currently that isn't possible. Thank you to all for your help.

Your phone is now identified as the 1GB Model and that will be the OTA update version you get offered. I still recommend you avoid all OTA Updates for the sake of stability and performance. There will be XT1541 Retail EU and Retail UK/GB Android 6.0 Firmware Images soon enough. Either can be flashed on your phone.
Sorry if you already discussed this, but when you say you don't recommend ota, do you mean if I first flashed firmwares, or even if I never flashed anything? And is this because it's just patching the previous version? What about small updates?

It's the difference between a clean install and an upgrade. The latter often results in a range of issues. A clean install is problem-free, other than genuine Android bugs. Obviously companies don't have much alternative than using them, and they mostly work. But if you want the best experience possible, do a clean install either of a Firmware Image, or a custom Stock ROM based on a Firmware Image.

Small updates are probably fine, but the first MM OTA Update is a massive file and a major OS change.
