Yh it works. This is what I did:

Followed the one-click rooting guide here
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click/

Loaded a generic rom which was packed in a .zip format-remember to do a nandroid backup
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-hero/
http://android.modaco.com/content/h.../09-10-hero-roms-radios-in-update-zip-format/

Ran the instantroot apk from here
http://www.tecnophone.it/2009/09/18/instantroot-il-modo-piu-semplice-per-avere-root-sul-tuo-android/
DIRECT LINK http://www.tecnophone.it/wp-content/uploads/Instant-Root-by-tecnophone.zip#googtrans(it|en)

If/When 2.0 comes out I will install it via recovery but will lose root. However, I will not lose the recovery

Idiot american. On the 90% of the world, we can't download payed apps from market. So we need to root our phone and then use market enabler to work around that.

without "idiot americans" there would be no Android in the first place, so u should refrain from this kind of comments. No hate on xda please.

You should apologize

Wow man. You should apologize. We don't go for this kind of stuff around here.

Anyway, this little package concerns me a bit. It looks like they found an exploit. (Bluetooth maybe) But why haven't they shared it? Me thinks it could be malware too.

If there is an exploit, I wonder if it is in Linux, or maybe even Unix/OS X.

What a ****ing moron, paid apps on rooted phone works fine out of the box in the UK. And yes, without the Americans, you wouldn't even have Android. I cannot believe how retarded your comment actually was.
