In reading this thread and suffering through the same problems when I went overseas I agree that the better buy would be the ISGS2. The access to manually selecting networks overseas is very important. Only the people who haven't traveled out of the country wouldn't understand. The cosmetic differences is up to the person. I personally like touchwiz 4.0. The only things i have to add on it is Power Amp music player so i can play WMA files and my usual apps.

I agree totally. The people who say it works fine obviously haven't travelled outside the US. I got the SGS II intl and no longer have the issue.

So will pretty much every custom ROM on here for the SGS2 unlock the manual network selection menu? That seems to be the only drawback to the US version if you prefer the four button layout.
To answer your question custom roms with another radio flashed on it will enable it to work. The thing that is not being addressed is just because you can access the menu doesn't mean that it works. I have confirmed on the captivate from my trip overseas last summer that it only worked properly with AT&T's radio out of the device.

Yes and no. The phone still has some issues even with non att radio but for the most part that works. If you travel a lot like me the international version is the easiest fix for stress free travel.

I like the AT&T version. I don't like that large apple like center button (seriously stop taking design ideas from apple... I DON"T WANT AN iANYTING). The slight thickness and weight increase are a non issue to me, the phone is more than thin and light enough.

Wish AT&T kept the FM radio though.

Yeah I like the no button idea ... its the way everything is heading especially in ICS but I love my new white international version. The menu and back version are invisible until pressed. Just landed back in the US. I'll post pics later I'm on my last flight home.

It's really easy. Just a matter of unlocking your device, removing the csc, and dropping in an apns-conf.xml from the international version. If you aren't comfortable Modding your device the international version might be better if you plan on traveling a lot.

Please do post a step-by-step. From everything I've experienced while travelling, it seems the only way I've been able to bypass and manually select in the past was when I had infuse and I'd used your custom ROM (Infused) in conjunction with the Rogers Radio (rogers doesn't limit their customers' ability to manual selection menu). Failure to have been using BOTH your Infused 2.3.3 AND the Rogers radio would lock me out of the Manual Network Scan menu, and just grey it out to "Default" which=whatever ATT wants you to be attached to.

If you do know of an alternate way to re-enable that menu, please do share.

I ended up taking the leap and getting one of the i9100's (in nice looking white) while I was in Thailand this week. I was so excited to have a phone without carrier modification!

After setting it up and using it for a day, I just can't get over the damn physical key in the middle of the phone. I feel so weird using the button, and after having the HTC Inspire, then Samsung Infuse, and then SGSII ATT version, I just can't go back to a sloppy physical key, so I eBay'd and sold the new white one and went back to my old ATT Galaxy S II in favor of the four keys. Now I just need to work through the issue of not being able to manually select a carrier's network.

So the ONLY complaint I have running stock rooted on codeworx's kernel is my continued inability to manually scan\select networks. I installed CM7.1 keeping the same radio installed and notice the scan is available. gtg and several other devs said it's really a simple mod to enable the manual carrier selection, so I'd like to ask for assistance in creating a stock rom to make this change. That's the only "must have" that I need, and I'm really not keen on CM7 (I know you all love it, it's just too much for me).... so if someone could mod the stock rom and post it for me to flash over mine I would really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really appreciate it!

Hello,

I am expecting delivery of my white GSII in an hour or two. I opted for the international version for a few reasons, but I have one question about it. I'm used to OTA updates straight from Google to my AT&T Nexus One.... how will I get my OS updates to this phone (without rooting)?

You will not be able to get the official OTA updates from AT&T.
However there are a few other ways you can get it.

#1. in these XDA forums you will find download links of all new
updates which usually get posted almost as soon as they are
officially released in Europe.
#2: use google search on computer to find updates to download
i.e. samsung i9100 2.3.5 gingerbread rom download

Can you give me a brief rundown of how I could do this? I love the stock rooted rom (have had no issues, and you know my luck with non-stock roms, hehe), so would be super cool to be able to just make a mod to it where I can finally access the manual carrier selection that AT&T felt we're all too dumb to want to be able to access.

Thanks as always!

(FM Radio)

Perhaps a good place to start would be to look in the rom of the
Samsung SGS2 i9100 because that does have a working fm radio.
Therefore it must have whatever software it needs or requires.

If nothing else it's at least some kind of good starting point.
Just because the hardware is there means nothing. The asses at AT&T did the same to Motorola Atrix. The Broadcom chip has the FM Radio but they have disabled it I'm told at the system board level. I hear the exact same thing ATT had Samsung do for the US version. Just so people can pay for their internet and not listen over the air. And I use Fm Radio because my GYM Tv's use various FM Frequencies for Audio!

I was going to reply with "who actually uses FM radio anymore?" ... but you actually brought up a really good point. My gym does too, but i usually listen to music not the TV, but very good application showing the continued need to have FM tuner built-in. Kudos for the comment.

You are not the only one. Almost in every forum people comment that FM is so 80's and to use Streaming radios! I use it to listen to Gym TV, Music/news sometimes when I want to conserve my battery or conserve data consumption.. and also in places where I have poor data speeds due to signal strength! I do have TuneInRadio which I use, but would rather use FM to listen to NPR than through TuneIn.

Since they (ATT) disabled the FM on my Atrix (now broken), I had to take a small Sansa Clip with me to the gym so that if I see something interesting on the TV and I want to listen to that..
