Internet connection unstable notification

I'm on the other side of this coin... for the past 2 years I've had several devices here at home and they all have worked OK with my home wifi... but with this Note3 I get the unstable notification several times a day... After doing some serious monitoring of my Internet connection I've found out my Internet actually IS unstable and the Note3 is advanced enough to let me know about it... what seems to be happening is my upload speed drops down to, or almost to, zero now and then and that's when the notification pops up... and i appreciate that because it's let me know I have a problem and helped me track it down.

so... that being said... Thank you Note3 for showing me my problem ... BUT ... would be nice to have the option to turn off the notification now that I know what is happening while I decide on what to do for a fix or maybe decide to just ride with it for awhile until I switch to another provider.

Note: it's not your device glitching in that causes this... it's your internet... and your other devices don't have the feature that let's you know you lost your up/down link for a few seconds... seems kinda sensitive though because under most circumstances, small glitches like this that go unnoticed aren't a problem anyway... that's why we have buffering.
Absolutely this.

While this could be true, in my case I don't think so. Because the unstable notification pretty much only happens while I'm in a "fringe" area in my home or from a public router. 90% of the time I'm using my phone I happen to be sitting right next to my router and I rarely get that notification (I think it may have happend once since I've had the phone since Oct10th).
But any time I'm sitting in a low signal area I get the notification. It really just seems to me like the Note 3 does not have a good wifi with regards to distance or signal strength. When I DO have a wifi connection I've noticed the speed is faster than any of my other devices....

I've had the same issuesand it was driving me crazy so I went out and bought a new router. Now I'm not sure what the difference is but the dual band netgear router I bought had 2 networks to connect to. The first is the 2.4ghz and when I connected to that I would keep getting the unstable wifi. When I switched to the 5ghz network it had worked perfectly not one unstable message. Im not sure if that helps anyone out,and why it works better on the 5ghz but seems like I found a solution for myself.

I had unstable wifi messages. I also had terrible 4G performance - sometimes I'd have full 4G bars but zero data connectivity, or garbled phone calls. Other times I couldn't get any bars to begin with.

Performed cache reset, performed factory reset (had to for rooting the phone), no change. Talked to customer service, have a replacement arriving today. Hopefully this fixes things.

i too called a rep and got my replacement this morning, as soon as i connected it to my wifi, i got the "internet connection is unstable error" message, I'm sending it back immediately and am on the phone with them as i type this

I think b00mb00mchuck is dead on, and I will tell you why:

I as well was experiencing this issue, when I first noticed it I was at home. I have Satellite Internet because I live in a rural area, what I first thought was because of the high latency issues satellite internet has was why I was getting the error. But then I started noticing it at work where we have a very fast and stable wireless connection. So after digging around on the internet and XDA I found the service menu codes and shut off the WiFi sleep mode (or whatever it is ) , after I did that and rebooted I no longer had that error at work which is a solid internet connection , but I still got it at home all the time even though my other devices, which includes an iPad 2, an iPhone 5s , 2 laptops a Chromebook , and a Moto Droid X , NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES WITH MY WIRELESS - its at least somewhat associated with the phone recognizing crappy network connectivity.

please for the love of jobless elves at the North Pole, don't go back to iPhone.

No that is not the case when all of my other wireless devices like our remaining iPhones, laptops, DVR, Smart TV stream online content without issue. I can stream on any of these devices from across the house without receiving the first buffer message, yet the Note 3 will give unstable network messages and buffer multiple times while standing in the same room as the router. If this is a case of advanced features on the Note 3, its the Note 3 detecting its own poor WiFi performance.

That does not explain how my other devices can stream without buffering but then the Note 3 buffers continually on the same video. And I'm referring to testing within the same time frame. For example play the video on iPhone , stop playback, open same video on note, stop playback and open again on iphone. Only buffers on note 3. The problem is the Note 3.

Same thing on my end. I read an article just the other day about the way google has set up the youtube buffer to only buffer in chunks of data at a time ( I will try and find it, it was an interesting explanation ) my theory is that since android is owned/controlled by google then google has hardbaked that same buffer coding into the OS somehow. I did notice it on my Stock load on the N3 at work , but it hasn't seemed to rear its ugly head in Hyperdrive ROM. This is an interesting realization I just had. Not sure can anyone (who is still following this thread ) confirm ?

I understand your frustration, I have the same problem. I also had a similar problem a couple of years ago with a brand new iPad. There was a substantial number of people posting of poor wifi performance with their new iPads when everything else worked fine, including their old iPads. All of the "solutions" to "fix" the problem contained updated your router or at least the firmware. I couldn't understand why I should have to do any of that when everything else worked flawlessly. It had to be the iPads fault, didn't it?

I suppose, depending on how you look at it, it was the iPads problem, but in the end, when I upgraded my router, the iPad worked flawlessly and so did everything else. It seems that the wifi "standard" may be more a guide to some manufacturers. There are a lot of little things going on within the wifi communications and if one end or the other doesn't quite understand what the other is saying, well, you get what we are getting.

I'm not saying that this is the same problem or that upgrading a router or firmware will even fix it. But, if it's an option, it might.

My N3 works great on wifi at work where it's connecting to a relatively new Netgear router and a 50mb cable connection, but at home, where it's connecting to a 2-3 year old CradlePoint router and a 2-3mb AT&T cellular connection, I get constant "Your internet connection is unstable" prompts. I have updated the firmware on my home router, but it didn't help me. I'd would just by a newer router, but I'm thinking of trying out HughesNet, so I'll probably hold off. It, sure would be nice if Cox would run that cable line another 1/2 mile so I could get real internet at home. :fingers-crossed:

That is satellite internet service right? I can tell you from my experience, Don't Do it! - unless you like surf the web feeling like you are on AOL dial up AND have a monthly data cap. We pay upwards of 65 + a month, and get a 10gig limit every billing cycle, this is 10 gigs between 8am and 2am and then another "free" 10 gigs from 2am to 8am, if we hit the 10 gig prime time limit we get throttled until the billing period resets.

Sorry for the thread jack. We now continue with your regularly scheduled programming.

This is not a device issue at all. It's an Android 4.3 issue. I have the Note 2 and didn't ever get this notification until I recently upgraded to 4.3.

Flaky Wifi

I just got my phone replaced under warranty for this issue and the new one is having the same problem as the old one. I think I figured out the issue though. I had my router set up to have my 2.4ghz band and 5ghz band using the same SSID and I would constantly get connected, get the unstable error, disconnect, and then reconnect. This was happening literally once a minute or more frequently. As soon as I changed the 5ghz band to a different SSID and connected only to that network, my disconnects and errors stopped. To me that means, it appears to believe your connection is unstable when it can bounce between the 2 bands because they use the same password and SSID. Like it connected to 5ghz, and then suddenly it was on 2.4 and then back on 5 and it had a mini-aneurysm or something.

This fix won't do me much good at work since I can't switch all of the SSIDs at the job sites to accommodate my phone, but at least it may be a start to finding a permanent fix.

Interesting read. I also get this message and would like to chime in here.

If you turn off your mobile data, the WiFi notifications stop. So it can't be anything to do with the WiFi signal.....
I am only on Wifi, I have no carrier.. so this must be related to Wifi and cannot be a carrier-only issue.

This is not a device issue at all. It's an Android 4.3 issue. I have the Note 2 and didn't ever get this notification until I recently upgraded to 4.3.
I also came from an earlier firmware (now, sadly, using 4.3) and I have never seen this "issue" in the preceding 18 months. This would seem to indicate that it is related to the update.

.... As soon as I changed the 5ghz band to a different SSID and connected only to that network, my disconnects and errors stopped. To me that means, it appears to believe your connection is unstable when it can bounce between the 2 bands because they use the same password and SSID....
My router only supports one band. Interesting suggestion about the frequency though. I have TW Cable/Phone/Internet and our cordless phone and router must be near the modem. After reading up on my router I've come to find that it has an automatic channel selection feature specifically to prevent frequency conflicts and interference.

My girl has an iPhone and was hit with a similar message very early this morning. Just a few minutes ago I unlocked the screen on my S3 (SCH-I535) and got this message. I was in a fringe area (three rooms away) but my girl was not (one room away).

Assuming for the moment that this is either an ISP issue or a router issue I performed a speed test just after seeing this message which showed 20 down and 2 up, certainly good enough for what I was doing at the time.

In reading this thread I can see we don't share a common ISP but wouldn't it be funny if we were all on the same router chipset?

If, in fact, nothing has changed with respect to the quality of my isp and if I do not experience an appreciable change in performance from what I have always had then I would be happy simply learning of a way to disable this warning.

Clearing the cache worked for me.

This only started showing up in the last day or two. And the Note 3 shows the message on ALL wifi internet connections. It is is fact a problem with the phone or OS. Mine is rooted, so no OS upgrades were received. I tried all other methods related to advanced wifi settings to no avail. Clearing the cache worked. Do it.

Ok, it does appear to be a temporary fix. I cleared the cache yesterday, and until this evening, the phone did not display the message. But, it's back again. Oh well. I guess I will install a custom rom next. As of now, it's just rooted stock.

I've had this message come up only a few times since I had my juggernote3. The source of the problem was my wifi connection. All I did was power cycle my 2 routers and modem. Best of luck and happy testing :D

Interesting - I too have an Asus router (RT-N66U) and have the contact "connection unstable" messages.

I wonder if this is possibly an Asus issue and not a Samsung issue?
