For me it has no impact on battery life or performance. I'm on NOS 8.1, but it should work fine on any ROM. I disabled the buttons from the personalizations settings, so they don't interfere with the gestures.
I'm using a swipe up for going home, swipe left-to-right and right-to-left for back, swipe up and down for recents, swipe left and right for split screen and long press for Google Assistant (you need the "More shortcuts" app for that), but you can customize the gestures pretty much any way you want.
