Is it possible to update the software number?

Hello I am noob ,I started studying Android and english(my english is bad, you see?)
I have a HTC a9 of version 2.17.401.2, in the website HTC has a Rom 2.18.617.56, is it possible to upgrade?

First thing you must know is what these numbers means. 2.18.617 might sounds like it's newer than 2.17.401 but it's not.

a.bb.ccc.dd

a: Major android version update since phone release
b: related to HTC changes (software)
c: region
d: minor update / security patch

.401 means it's the software for phones sold in the european region. .617 is for phones sold in the USA . So 617 isn't newer than 401

I see that there is

2.17.401.2

Does it worth the shot to update it? Are there any differences/improvements?
