Is the Xoom really worth buying right now? I love the sound from the unit but...

So if a new version of Android like 4.2 comes along with a new nexus phone in November like some rumours say, the xoom will get it?

Cheers

As long as the Xoom is the only Google Experience 10" tablet on the market, it certainly will. Once the Xoom's successor comes out, I think that'll be the end of official OTA update support from Google.

I would imagine the Xoom would get future Jelly Bean updates (like 4.2) no matter what, but I would be shocked if it got any updates past Jelly Bean unless there still is no Xoom successor by that time.

Due to the fact it is a Google Experie device just about any version that hits AOSP will be able to be run on it until such time as they completly drop support of Tegra 2 or do something to the OS that the physical device just can't support.

The Kernel is flashable so it will never be a problem provided there is a developer out there willing to work on it.
And any AOSP version will be supportable with the right Kernel...

There is ONE limitation I can think of where the Xoom will be unable to run the latest and that is if the OS expands in size as far as the /System partition is concerned. I know Team EOS JB Stingray is very close to running out of space there and if the next flavor of android adds a lot to /System it could be difficult to squeeze it into the unit.

But I'm sure there is a workaround for that too.

You may not get direct updates from Google (truth is they only really handle the Wingray anyway) but you will easily see support from other sources here until the Devs dry up and move on or the Unit just is too old to run the latest.

Interesting about the space issue. I was under the impression that the Xoom simply had 16 or 32 GB of space shared between system, data, internal storage, cache, etc.

In terms of Google only handling Wingray, that's not correct. They also handle Stingray. The only reason Stingray updates come so long after Wingray is because Verizon must test and approve the OTAs before Google can send them out. That approval step obviously doesn't exist for Wingray. But whenever Google says an Android update is coming to the Xoom, that means both Stingray and Wingray.

Standard LCD
How does the screen fare against the ips screens of the same resolution?
Also, for 100 more than a xoom, I can get an acer a700. It is also an lcd panel, but it is 1920*1200 and it is a tegra 3 device.
What are your thoughts?

Cheers

It might be shared, but the system partition is a specific size... and it's getting tight with JB. I haven't followed it a lot since 'it' works, but I seem to recall reading that EOS moved some things that were normally in the system partition out of it and just 'linked' to them due to the size limits.

I also read, some time ago, about changing the size of the partition, but it was just once and I'm not sure if that is even possible to do on the Xoom.

I'd be surprised if Xoom was dropped from 4.2.
5.0 is a complelty different story.

Also remember they are keeping Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus going in phone terms so I see no reason not to update Nexus 7 and Xoom.
I can't imagine another tablet popping up just yet and if it does it'll be an upgraded Nexus 7 and/or a larger screen sized... Not to replace the Xoom I would guess.
Hardware (internal) wise I am not sure there have been THAT many changes apart from quad core since Xoom.. I think its still a good relevant tablet!

The nexus s has an official JB update and it's successor was the galaxy nexus which of course is up to JB.

I still think our xooms have got some life left in them, I reckon we'll get official OTA updates even after JB

Well I can assure you the Nexus S will not get any updates past Jelly Bean. The hardware has a hard enough time with Jelly Bean. If you ever get the chance to use JB on a Nexus S, you should...just to see it. It's pretty painful to use. I have the T-Mobile model running stock JRO03E and it's rough.

Google has already committed to Jelly Bean on the Xoom, so if 4.2 is still Jelly Bean, the Xoom will definitely see an update. But I would still be shocked if the next major version of Android (be it Key Lime Pie or whatever they decide to call it) made it to the Xoom unless there isn't another 10-inch Nexus tablet to replace it by that point.

Love my xoom I've only had it about a week and I do almost everything with it. I only wish it came with a hard keyboard, by not really. Gives me an excuse to get a BT one. Yay for being a gear head!

I got my Xoom 4G LTE for 300 even and have no regrets, I dont see anything better on the horizon and it is crazy smooth and fast with JB. I hope it stays relevant for another year or so. It is a valuable tool for me at work, and I dont see much else they can do better with hardware except for RAM and speed. Both of which are fine for now with JB.
