Issue rooting Google store Pixel XL

I just got my replacement PIxel XL and I managed to unlock the bootloader and install TWRP 3.0.2-0 RC1 and installed a custom rom. When I attempt to flash the SuperSU binaries it gives me a message as if it completed successfully. After rebooting, SuperSU app isn't installed and Root checker fails the root test.

Anyone have any ideas on what the issue is or a possible resolution?

Hello... Are you using 2.79 sr3 or sr4?

That version of SuperSU didn't help either.

I just ended up restoring to the factory rom and redoing my bootloader and custom rom and it seemed to have fixed the issue. It was a very weird issue non the less.
