Issues with Phone after Installing custom ROMs

I have installed 4 different custom ROMs over the last two weeks: Cyanogen; CyanideL; Dirty Unicorns and last Gummy. They run variously a 4.4 through 5.1 variant. With all I have experienced problems using the phone (that is, the actual phone feature - make and receive calls). In general, having made or received a call the phone screen locks and I am unable to get control back - I have to do a battery pull and reboot. I have made a call and put the phone to my ear - the prox sensor kills the screen and then that is it - unable to do anything. I have made calls without raising the phone to my ear and sometimes able to use keypad to interact with the system at the other end, sometimes not.

I am about to go back to a stock (but rooted) ROM (see here) but thought someone with better tech skills than I might be able to give me a solution to my woes.

Additional background: been rooted for about 3 years. Comfortable flashing new ROMs (now) via recovery mode using CWM. Comfortable using Odin. Have read a little about flashing modems and kernels but have stayed away from that so far.

In my experience many of the ROMs don't have the proximity sensor functioning correctly I see a lot of users get around this by flashing Shift kernel or AGNI Kernel. If absolutely no ROM works including stock then your proximity sensor could have dust covering it and I suggest getting some canned air or even trying to blow inside the top earpiece. I haven't tried any of the ROMs you mentioned so I have no experience on the proximity functionality with them.
