I went from stock 4.0.3 to German 4.0.4 xxlrk a few days ago. My phone was using speedmod kernel and I did a wipe using cwm recovery without any ill effects.

I had the same issue... the superbrick can be over come by a repartition in adb

Obviously the culprit is wiping with CWM,I have factory Reset million times with no consequences at all,and just once with CWM was enough to Superbrick it,and yes I was on stock ROM.

I suspect you had CWM via CF kernel, right? If so, then supposedly CF kernel for Ice Cream Sandwich is unsafe as well considering it is based on or close to the stock kernel. Then again, as always I may be wrong.

I had completely stock both ROM and kernel the CWM I used was the one on DR,Ketan's stock ROMs thread page which had served me very well.
Anyway I am out now with my wife till monday,and have got my HD2 WM handset with me,on monday when I am back will give another serious PIT try.
