Hi guys,
When you access *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone Information... What value do you have in Set Preferred Network Type field?
Mine says TD-SCDMA,LTE, CDMA,EvDo GSM/WCDMA when in 4G mode.
When I activate 5G mode, Set Preferred Network Type field says Unknown.

Can anyone who has a ROG 3 please tell me what profile do you have on your phone on 4G and 5G mode and the phone variant (ex: Tencent, Global, etc).

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards.

Not really. Its as bad as the rog2, and that one sucked too.

It is true for the 16 MP but the 64 MP is much better in photo mod. After I tried the manual mod (with all auto) and it is all opposite 16 MP pictures looks clearer than 64 MP. For me it looks better than my previous phone, the HTC U Ultra that was one of the best in pictures 4 years ago. But I am not a picture addict, and when I want to take good shots I am using a camera. So it does the job for me.

This phone is a performances monster and is made for that.

Hey, are you still experiencing Black Crush despite Asus' updates?

Only on some videos on youtube using youtube app or on chrome with Firefox never happen. Also on netflix no black crush and on videos played directly on the phone it is all fine. It seems to be related to google HDR on youtube that is optimized for they Pixel phone.

New finding freeze app package vendor.qti.iwlan then phone should deep sleep normally

How did you freeze it? (Disbale option is greyed-out under app info)
I'm thinking of doing it via Titanium - any issues/ potential problems if this package is frozen?

"Phone idle" seems to be sucking a lot of battery life.
I've turned off auto-sync/ adaptive battery/ BT & WIFi auto-scanning to see if any of this helps.......

ASUS ROG Phone 3
Hi XDA,

ASUS announced the ROG Phone 3 earlier today. I reviewed the phone for the XDA Portal after having used it for nearly a month (I received it on June 26th and published my review on July 22nd.) The phone has a metric ton of features, so if you have any specific questions about the ROG Phone 3, feel free to ask me a question. I'll enable notifications for new replies in this thread so I'll answer them as they come in.

I recommend reading the following posts first to see if they answer any of your questions:

Our launch coverage: ASUS launches the ROG Phone 3 with the Snapdragon 865 Plus, 144Hz display, and 6000mAh battery
My review: ASUS ROG Phone 3 Review: The King of Gaming Smartphones is back

I have also answered a few questions about the phone already on Reddit.

Hi and thanks for the review.
So I have had Rog 2 since the launch and although it's great overall, it has some big issues on display side and I want to know if rog 3 also suffers from the same issues.

1.the first issue that almost everyone knows about is the gray color turning to reddish color on lower brightness levels especially on 120hz. You'll have to test this with gray color background in a dark room but I can notice it even in a normal lit room.

    2. the screen is kind of grainy and has a lot of bandings. you can also test this by downloading a 5% gray picture and turn the brightness all the way down in a completely dark room and look for oled bandings and lines and grainyness!

    3. Huge Black crush! If you search google for "black crush test" the first result is a reddit question that leads to a video of a test picture. On rog 2 only and only on 100% brightness all the squares up to 5 are visible but as we turn down the brightness almost all squares become black (although they actually should be gray) and we can only see the first three squares at the bottom.(255% 100% and 50%)
and that means if we want to see everything in true color and we are supposed to see, we have to use 100% brightness all the time which not only hurts the eyes, but also brings screen burn-ins in as soon as 3 2 months.
Here's the youtube link for black crush test
    https://youtu.be/fv6T7aHsd54

I hope you can check these issues and give us real life feedback
    thanks

    1. I do not see any reddish tint on gray colors in low brightness levels in low ambient lighting. I tested at 144Hz, 1-20% brightness, dark room, and with the Reddit is Fun app set to a dark gray background.

    2. I looked up a 5% grain photo and found a video on YT. At the minimum brightness wherein the picture becomes visible to my eye in a dark room, there's uneven graininess. Raising the brightness a bit and I can see horizontal banding. No issues at higher brightnesses, though.

    3. Similar result on the ROG Phone 3, sadly.

    Hi

can u check is the Rog phone 3 support 144hz durinng NETFLIX vedio?

i mean does the rog 3 play vedio in NETFLIX in high freshrate at 144fps or 120fps like the oneplus 8 pro or oppo find x2 pro ?

No, the ROG Phone 3 does not support motion estimation/motion compensation, or MEMC, as it's called on the OnePlus 8 Pro or OPPO Find X2 Pro. The OnePlus 8 Pro and OPPO Find X2 Pro can do hardware-accelerated MEMC thanks to a dedicated display processor called the Iris 5, designed by a company called Pixelworks. More details on that here: https://www.xda-developers.com/pixe...ssor-android-display-experience-oppo-find-x2/

I am also interested in knowing abot this , and also if there is image retention at High brightness, can be checked by staying at a static page for 1mint or more the quick switching to to a gray image , like the chrome in dark mode with all tabs closed , I take I screenshot of it an zoom it and out it into full screen that time I can see the ghost image of previously shown page

I don't see any obvious image retention at high brightnesses.

I'm really interested in the acoustics/ speaker volume - how does this aspect compare to other current flagships & also specifically to ROG 2??

    Thanks.

It's actually not quite as loud as the ROG Phone II. Still gets very loud in comparison to most devices, though. I've mentioned all the audio features that ASUS and Dirac added to the ROG Phone 3 in my review. You can thankfully tweak the speaker quality a bit with the 7-band equalizer and Bass/Treble slider in AudioWizard.

    Hi MishaalRahman,

Does 8gb ram version perform similarly as 12gb ram version? and does it comes with screen protector preapplied ?

I don't have the 8GB or 12GB RAM version, but I suspect they'll perform the same in day-to-day usage as my 16GB RAM model. Keep in mind that the 8GB RAM model has the Snapdragon 865 and not the Snapdragon 865+, so the CPU and GPU performance will be very slightly lower. I don't think it'll be noticeable, though.

The phone does not come with a screen protector pre-applied, though ASUS sent me an antimicrobial glass screen protector that I applied.

Thanks for answering my previous question.

As you already mentioned that the display is quite good but I want to know the sharpness of the text. I'm coming from a Galaxy Note9 and I've been using 1440p the entire time. Though I can accept 1080p display but I still wonder how sharp ROG 3 is considering 6.59" display.

And also how easy it is to get used to the massive weight and thickness of this phone?

Yeah, the text isn't as sharp as on other phones with QHD+ displays like the OPPO Find X2 Pro (which I was using before this). I can see pixels when I look closely. It's not bad enough for me to have cared about until you mentioned it, though.

As for the weight and thickness, it was very easy for me to get used to it - I've been using large phones for over a year now, so the ROG Phone 3 doesn't phase me. However, it does sag a bit more in my pockets when I wear looser shorts at home, so yeah it's definitely thick and heavy haha.

I am comming from a oneplus device (6) and am addicted to the ui gesture navigation, does ROG ui offer anything comparable (screen off control audio by drawing a symbol) or would we be able to map an air trigger to do something while the screen is off, say double tap to fast forward? I am not familiar if even android has this built in or not currently. Thanks!

Yes, there are screen off gestures. You can draw || with two fingers to pause/resume music, draw a < or > to change track, or draw a W, S, e, m, Z, or V to launch an app of your choice. Currently, you can't map AirTrigger to do "whatever" you want like double tap to fast forward, but I'm sure custom ROMs/root will open up that possibility. (I know several devs are already exploring porting AirTriggers over.)

    Thank you MishaalRahman!

If you are viewing the ROG3 in landscape mode with the cooler attached (and the kickstand out) - are you able to connect headphones to the cooler's headphone jack if the cooler is resting on a desk?

Not with the ports facing downwards (ie. towards the table/desk), but you can flip it around and it'll actually stay up that way, lol. The downside to having it in reverse landscape orientation, though, is that the AirTriggers can't be used since they're at the bottom.

The sound system benefits (volume/ bass/ enhancements etc) are only during gaming, or throughout general usage of phone (calls/ music/ videos)?

Yes, the audio tuning (called "GameFX") is not just for game audio. Any audio played back through the speakers will benefit from the Dirac audio tuning. If you have an ROG headset, then Dirac's audio tuning profiles will also apply.

    Thanks for the awesome review
Could u plz tell the following
    How are the thermals?
What are cpu temps after 2-3 hour continuous gaming without aerocooler?

In CPU Throttling Test and GFXBench's Manhattan 3.1 long-term performance/battery lifetime test, the ROG Phone 3 does exhibit some thermal throttling. However, the drop in performance shouldn't be noticeable in most games, since the loads from these aforementioned benchmarks aren't reflective of real-world gaming loads.

    Hello
Thank you Mishaal , is the chinese version has l1 and 4g+ agrégation? And how is the battery life compared to oneplus 8 pro or k30 pro , i do care a lot about performance and battery life so is the chinese rog 3 with sd865 plus better than oneplus 8 pro for my usage? Thank youa lot

I would look up the band support for the Tencent model on ASUS' website. As for the battery life...it'll trounce the OnePlus 8 Pro and Redmi K30 Pro, easily. The latter doesn't even have a high refresh rate display.

    1.There is hebrew(עברית) language support?
2.speakers are better than rog 2?

Speakers are better tuned than the ROG Phone II but get slightly less loud.

I have been a loyal Pixel customer until now. I love my Pixel 4 XL, which is working very well. However, I am blown away by the ROG 3 specs. I am especially attracted to the display and the audio in addition to the fast performance. I have three questions for you i
    1) What was your experience like with the display. Will it blow the Pixel 4 XL out of the water?
    2) What was your experience with the performance like in comparison to other phones?
    3) Is Asus good about updates ( yearly system updates as well as security updates on a monthly basis)?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my questions.
    CJ

    1) The display doesn't blow me away like the one on the OPPO Find X2 Pro did. That's the only display that has ever truly impressed me recently. However, it's still quite good and I didn't have any complaints while watching hours of anime on it ;)

    2) Easily the smoothest phone I've ever used, thanks to the max 144Hz refresh rate. I swapped from the ROG Phone 3 to the OnePlus Nord to do a review of the latter, and I really missed the smoother 144Hz display. 90Hz is a huge downgrade IMO.

    3) ASUS has gotten a lot better recently, since the ZenFone 6 launch. They've shown they're willing to listen to community feedback and are taking their software more seriously. Still, software support requires manhours which means money, so we'll see how well things turn out.

Hello, I don't play games on mobile at all yet I'm considering buying this phone simply because of the huge battery and speaker setup as those are the most important for me.

Do you think I should go for it?

I don't actually play many games on mobile either (though I forced myself to for the sake of the review), but yeah, go for it! I think the smooth 144Hz display and insane battery life are more than enough reasons to use the ROG Phone 3 over other devices.

    Hi MishaalRahman,

I'm from Indonesia and I'm interested in buying this phone when it's available here, but there's a certain thing I wanna make sure first. I played Pokemon Go (PoGo) a lot on my Samsung Galaxy Note 9, this phone make it possible for me to play PoGo using 4 different accounts, here are the details:
    - 1 account on PoGo App downloaded from Google Play
    - 1 account on PoGo App downloaded from Samsung Galaxy Store
    - 1 account on cloned Google Play PoGo App put in Samsung Secure Folder
    - 1 account on cloned Samsung Galaxy Store PoGo App put in Samsung Secure Folder

If I were to buy ASUS ROG Phone 3, would there be an alternative solution so I still can play with 3-4 accounts?

ZenUI's TwinApps feature allows you to clone Pokemon Go, so you can clone PoGo downloaded from Google Play. I don't know about downloading the Galaxy Apps version, though.

How is the PWM flickering on this phone? Does it have a DC Dimming option?

I don't personally have issues with OLED flickering at low brightnesses, but no, there's no DC dimming option.
