Hello chasmodo, I was perusing through the AbyssNote kernel thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362424 and thus I have a small query.

What is the difference between the Original and Custom variants of the CW Touch and Red Pill Touch kernels?

I believe, CW which refers to ClockWorkMod and Red Pill are two different types of custom recoveries, right?
:silly:
They are all basically the same. The only difference is in the logo and the color of the options. It doesn't matter which one of Abyss 4.2 variants you want to use, they will all do the job.

Thank you chasmodo. Thus, I infer I am free to choose any of the four available choices!
:p

Hi, I have Stock ICS ROM (DXLR2 in my S.E.A. region) installed. Currently I've rooted using CWM (blue touch UI) & SU files.

Anyway, my Note seems to heat up easily (even before rooting as well) to 45 Degree Celsius after surfing web for just few minutes. And, I can feel the back is warmer around the camera area. Of course, battery consumes faster too due to high temp.

My concern : is this related to Stock Kernel? If I flash custom ICS kernel, would it help to improve? If so, which custom kernel do you recommend? Thanks:)

P/S : I prefer to use Stock ROM first, and willing to change custom kernel if it could help.

I know next to nothing about stock Roms, because I had rooted my Note the second day after the purchase and never looked back.:)

Still, I don't think that your heating issue could be attributed to running stock kernel alone; it's more likely the kernel/app combo that's bugging you.
Stock Roms are notorious for being lumbered with tons of crapware that behaves the way it wants, not the way you'd like your system to behave.
Rooting your stock Rom properly (not with CWM.zip) with a decent TW kernel could be the answer to your problem: you'd get a well-tested kernel and you could remove various Samsung faeces like music and social hubs etc.

I'd recommend using Notecore kernel as a first step towards resolving your problems. Go to the OP of this thread and download Standard NC version for PC Odin - it's a tar file.

1. download PC Odin if you don't have it (Google PC Odin 1.87) and run it from your PC
2. click on 'PDA' and browse to the Notecore tar
3. put your Note into download mode (volume down + home + power)
4. connect the phone to the PC
5. wait for Windows to install the necessary drivers
6. wait for PC Odin to display a yellow highlight with a COM number
7. hit flash
8. you are properly rooted and running the Notecore kernel

It shouldn't take more than 4-5 minutes. If all goes well download Triangle Away, install it and reset your binary counter.
Then you can proceed with removing Sammy crap and tailoring your Note according to your needs.

Important: Do NOT use your existing CWM to flash anything - it is dangerous. After flashing Notecore you can use its CWM to do whatever you like.

Hi Chasmodo, thanks for your guidance. I'll try to install Notecore as recommended by you. Actually, I have freezed few Stock apps using System Tuner Pro earlier too. On the other hand, currently there are close to 50 third party apps installed.

Few questions,
1. Is this Notecore kernel compatible with all Stock ICS ROM no matter from any region? I mean all original phone functions will remain working well?
2. Does this kernel included root automatically?

P/S : FYI, I've flashing other .zip files using blue touch UI CWM before:eek: Anyhow, will follow your advice trying not to use it anymore to flash again for phone safety (my Note has been replaced with MoBo previously due to super-brick caused by improper flashing with un-safe kernel and by wiping data/factory reset....scared!):D

Again, thank you:)

Kernel_CM9.0.0_SR_CWM_Flashable.zip posted in the OP.

This kernel was extracted from cm-9.0.0-n7000.zip, which is CM9 Stable Release. This means that all the major bugs have been
removed and this is the final iteration of CM9 Rom for SG Note.

1. Yes.

2. Yes, and it includes a safe CWM as well.
Thanks for your confirmation. I'll give my Note a try sooner:)

This is the latest version? Can I use it directly on my Note as what you have guided & recommended to me earlier? Thanks.

Hi Chasmodo, I've installed Notecore v12.5 successfully & Triangle Away worked to reset binary counter. Thanks.

Anyway, I found something's wrong with Settings --> Security --> Screen Lock --> None, Swipe, Face Unlock, Signature (All 4 options are in grey colour and unable to select / use). Any idea to help?

Before flashing Notecore, I flashed Stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM to clean whatever flashing files earlier (not doing full wipe).

I think it would be best to search for Rom specific answers in Q and A thread. I am afraid this is beyond the scope of this thread.

Greetings Chasmodo. Since I've installed Notecore v12.5, can I do any wiping (data/factory reset, cache and Dalvik cache) at CWM recovery? Is it safe?
