Love the device, just got it today. Am I safe without a case? If it drops do I risk major damage to the device or the piece on the back that snaps on?

I find it one of the most slippery of all the phones i've owned. When i discovered a crack in the speaker seal, moto asked me if i dropped the phone. Never dropped, don't want to use it without a case. Absolutely need a good case. I made a mistake ordering a nice looking ebay case under $4.00. Now i want to spend $10+ on a quality case.
Needed? Nope.
Desired since you put some cash out for a nice device and you might want to keep it in great condition since it's mainly plastic? Yep, definitely.
As for recommendations, people need to choose the cases they find most appealing and at prices they can afford so I rarely ever go that far. There are quite a few cases available because the Moto G3 is a pretty popular device - the Moto G series are Motorola's best selling phones - so you'll find something to your liking at a good price if you spend time doing the research.
An hour after that misquote from CES someone else from Lenovo put out a press release clarifying that the Moto line of devices is not going anywhere - it's their best selling devices so even though Lenovo has made some stupid decisions over the years (what they're doing to ThinkPads is one of them) they're not THAT stupid as to dump the most popular best-selling hardware devices in the history of their Motorola Mobility purchase. Now I hear the Moto G3 might be going away since Lenovo took over.
