Well you can try.
There is a option to boot the kernel instead of installing it.
That way it wont be permantly installed onto your device.
You will need a tool that dous that automaticly or you can manualy boot it trough fastboot.

I use the nexus root toolkit.

If something goes wrong it can also unbrik your device with the toolkit

Dont forget to report back if it works ^^

sorry for the lack of updates. elex gov and other things are coming, I've been preoccupied with the app and the nexus 6 and getting everything updated to lollipop.

Have a Merry Christmas!
No rush dude. Tablet is already great on .8 and the N6 is great too! Merry Christmas

@USBhost said in another thread that the kernels will work on the LTE model (except his). I was a little nervous to use TWRP and then flash a zip, but I took the plunge and fastboot flashed faux kernel in the meantime and it is working without issue.

I'm still unsure if the TWRP that is available works 100% without issue on the LTE model, but if/when it does, I will be jumping back over to ElX

You could always use

Fastboot boot boot.IMG

To see if it boots before you flash it permanently

So what are people over clocking this tablet to these days?
Looking at the cpu clock more than the gpu... Tablet gets a tad warm already. How's thermal throttling? Haven't checked since I've had mine 1 day...

So I've had the chance to do some modding on the nexus 9. I noticed that the max temp would get upto 77c when running benchmarks. This wasn't good at all... Well at least for me. So I decided to take her apart and see what I could do to help.
I added some mx2 thermal paste to the chip where the heat pad was. This has reduced my temps about 4-5c overall. It was quick and easy. I just had to decide to do it.
The one downside is this kernel seems to reduce performance benchmark wise... Scores in antutu go down about 2-3k for me and also geekbench 3 is lower. Real world performance isn't much different but just thought it was odd. My best antutu is stock right now at 58k...
This is after the mod.

Much better thermals. However it is only helping short term... There's no actual "heatsink" just the emi shield that spreads the heat...
I'll post pics of me opening it. I have to get it off my phone...

As you see, there is some weird glue on the nvidia chip. I'm not quite sure what it is but it won't come off...and it has a few air bubbles in it and doesn't cover the entire chip. Obviously terrible for thermals if you actually put a heatsink on it...

This is the underside of the EMI shield. All it has is a thermal pad. Which, if you look closely, doesn't even make full contact with the chip. So that's why I decided to use thermal paste. I'm sure if you had like a 1-1.5mm heatpad it would work better but that's all I had at the time. The thermal pad is 0.5mm thick.

Just flashed, love the kernel so far. Trickstermod isn't allowing me to edit or set GPU frequencies, so I just purchased the ElementalX app. Have to say THANK YOU. Since I use ElementalX on all my devices anyhow, the app is a perfect addition to each of my devices. Well done, and thank you for supporting all of my Android devices and experiences.. Have tried other kernels and always go back to ElementalX. Can't wait to see what future releases have in store for the N9 community.

Edit:

1 thing to add, DT2W doesn't seem to work if the screen falls asleep on it's own. If you lock the screen with the power button, DT2W functions as expected. Am I missing something, or is this normal?

You should start your own thread with nice step by step guide. Most of us here will flash just about anything... But at least I am leary of taking apart my devices

Yes, I'll need my own thread here soon. I'm hoping to get my hands on a thin copper sheet so I can replace the current emi shield with a copper one. I believe the current shield is stainless steel or a bronze metal so it's very poor in conducting heat. The copper flap over the shield I think is to dissipate heat behind the battery... So hopefully I'll be able to get a better guide up once I have all the materials. I'll need a new thicker thermal pad also...

Have you tried anything to alleviate some of the heat on the hotplate that is the Wi-Fi radio yet? (Sorry if you've already explained and I missed it)

No, wasn't aware there was a heat issue with it... The huge downside to this and adding cooling is the fact that it'll only work till the entire copper sheet is saturated with the heat.. Then it'll just built until it thermal throttles... Which this would basically make the inside of the tablet a small toaster oven... Since the heat has nowhere to go... :crying:

*Sigh* If only tablets could be constructed of some material other than plastic that has better heat transfer capabilities....If only such a material existed...

Yeah a lot of users are reporting huge issues with overheating of top backside of tablet (by the Wi-Fi radio) when doing things like simple web browsing or running speed tests.

Just to confirm, SELinux is NOT disabled in this kernel, correct?
