Never flash a custom kernel over another custom kernel. Go back to stock first by flashing the boot.img. Fewer problems in the long run.
I've been on OP3 and it was not that way. Although, flashing on OP5T is not as simple as OP3/OP3T. And thank you for the info :).

Hmm, what do you mean? I can change the display brightness just fine.
Let me try to explain. First I dirty flashed beta 2, set brightness to max and than installed your kernel. After boot was completed brightness slider was still to max, but brightness itself was around 25%. When I move slider to min it changes with the delay of 2 seconds. Than when I'm moving slider to about 25% it changes brightness, but moving above 25% brightness doesn't change. It doesn't matter if it's on 25% or 100% brightness always stays around 25%. Same problem was also with initial release of flash kernel and ElementalX. If I flash any other kernel than there is no more problem with brightness. Also the option in app "Lower max brightness" is disabled. I hope that I managed to explain what is happening with brightness, well at least on my phone :).

Hmm. Ok, thanks.

Do I need to root my phone?
No, but it's recommended.

Will I just flash this in recovery?..Im using official beta2 from oneplus site
Installation:
Flash the zip in your recovery
or
Auto-flash from Franco Kernel Updater app
The latest Beta of my Kernel Manager for Franco Kernel already has support for this device. If you're a user you can opt-in for the beta here https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.franco.kernel
Started with r17 to be in line with the OnePlus 5, since they share the same Kernel tree.
Build for 8.1 roms will be out tomorrow.
