Functionality

I've been reading up on Rooting & TWRP this tablet which is due to arrive soon.

AHE_XDA has written an extremely good and clear guide on Rooting with the stock kernel but there seems to be an issue with installing TWRP and rebooting.

However this Luis Kernel seems to do away with all the faff and provides straight forward regular Magsik & TWRP install. Does using this kernel on stock ROM effect the functionality of the device in any way?

The reason that i need a working TWRP is that I'm planning to have a stock ROM with MicroG as per the instructions here. I've already done it on my Nexus 5 and OnePlus 5T.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/how-to/guide-microg-deodex-signature-spoofing-t3862961

Thanks.

I tried to flash it over LineageOS 17.1 from nearby thread, and it fails to boot, then drops to TWRP. Various attempts with different versions of kernel (TWRP imgs flashed to Boot) plus Magisk - doesn't want to boot. Take backups to save time.
Ended up coming back to default kernel of LineageOS manually extracted from latest release zip.

I'm having the same exact issue. How did you extract the default kernel as reflashing LOS didn't work for me either?

LOS zip contains "boot.img", I took it out from zip with my version of LOS and flashed it to Boot partition in TWRP (same how this Kernel was flashed).
After that, Reboot to system should work just fine.

Here's one from build dated 2020-09-21 to save you time/traffic.

I thought that was it and tried it but it didn't work for me. Same issue, just fails to boot fully and goes back to twrp. I may just have to start from scratch and try to restore data.

Could also try to flash magisk over it. Maybe some root specific conflict. Default LOS boot.img is rootless.

On the side note, I'm curious how to identify what went wrong with this current kernel. Is it simply not compatible with LOS 17.1?

Reflashing LOS, GAPPS, Magisk, then restoring data worked for me. I haven't flashed custom stuff in ages so I did not make a back up but backing up and restoring just the data appeared to worked fine. For the latest kernel, I did notice it listed Aug as the security update so that could be why?

I like to share my work for my Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e (LTE). I have compiled this kernel so that my Galaxy Tab performs better and rooting with Magisk works better.
I'm testing this kernel on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e (gts4lvwifi) device and I think it should work on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e LTE (gts4lvlte) too.
The kernel I use on the latest Samsung Stock ROM with Magisk 20.3 and Magisk Manager App + Ex Kernel Manager.
The source code is a fork from the official LineageOS 17.1 sources.

The kernel runs for me with LineageOS and Stock Samsung ROM.

Sometimes I get a lot of help or feature requests from users of my LuisROMs and LuisKERNELs. My dog Luis and I try to fulfill most of the wishes, but that is not always possible. I do that as a little hobby and Luis does not always want to build ROMs :). Please understand if I can not always answer directly.

Kernel: I have pached up the Kernel to Linux 4.9.217 with many mods other devs (thanks to @LuK1337 for the base an incredible work!)
  • Pached from 4.9.112 up to 4.9.217 from caf
  • Removed lots of excessive bloat (improves security and performance)
  • Improved stability (several bugs not listed here have been fixed)
  • Boeffla Wakelock blocker driver V1.1.0
  • More I/O-Schedulers (fiops, sio, zen, maple)
  • Added fsync on/off support.
  • Disabled crc check
  • Optimized for performance and battery life
  • Compatible with EX Kernel Manager
  • Compatible with systemless root (recommend Magisk 20.x or higher !!!)
  • Wireguard kernel support
  • Many other misc. improvements not listed here

TWRP (LTE version) still good for Android 10?

This kernel doesn't work on a10. The op should fix the title.

How about twrp? Is it still applicable for Android 10? I have the LTE version.

I went back to Android 9 for the sake of getting TWRP and root but if it can be accomplished on Android 10 then I will update and then try the BL unlocking etc from there. Thanks.

Understand that the kernel is only applicable to Android 9.

Thanks (anyone who can advise)

EDIT if bootloader unlocking is a prerequisite (fully understand that) how can this be possible "make sure OEM Unlock in developer options is still checked" (AFTER the unlocking) (at the most it would be greyed out-in my case Android 9 or 10 it just vanishes once the BL is unlocked-which makes sense to me at least)

OP states "Unlock the bootloader, 1. Connect to WiFi network, 2. Enable OEM Unlock in developer options, 3. Turn off the tablet, Boot to download mode manually by plugging in USB and holding all the buttons for few seconds, 4. Follow instructions on the screen
Connect to WiFi network and make sure OEM Unlock in developer options is still checked"

Exactly the same for me. Thanks for explaining how to flash back the default lineageos kernel from boot.img.

update - Tried the kernel on sm-T720 , worked without issues. No kcal support.
    - please consider adding kcal/color/saturation options if possible.

    Thanks
Kcal will merged in the next days if stable ;) Testing today ;)))

I bought a used tab s5e from a local electronics store for less than half of the msrp. I then discovered that it wouldnt charge past 70%. Later I peeled off the sticker on the back and the tablet said 'not for sale'. It turns out that this was a display unit and these are configured to not charge past 70% to protect the battery. I didn't want to return it because it was a really good deal even if it doesn't fully charge. My question is will flashing this kernel allow my tablet to charge to 100%? Or this kernel will not be compatible with it? Thanks in advance.

There's an option in the battery settings that limits the tablet from charging beyond 85% to extend the battery life, you can take a look at that first. If that doesn't help, you can try a custom ROM and Kernel. Start with the kernel, as it is less intrusive. but to be honest, I have no idea if that would help. You can also try a factory reset.
If I was a betting man, I'd bet on Samsung limiting that device's charging capacity though the ROM.
