@DooMLoRD
This might be not the right thread but I thought the best would be to ask a well known kernel developer. I currently having an Acro S and I'm considering buying either an Xperia Z or Xperia ZL. Is there any difference between these 2 models. E.g. would it be possible to run kernels and roms developed for one on the other without any adaptations?
Thanks
No of course not, even though they are pretty much the same from a point of view, there are some differences that don't allow cross flash between different two phones. That is why he created two separate kernel for each phone.

I'm trying to follow the threads in the XZ forum to understand if I have this correctly. I think I could do this with a Z with all the posted FTF's and such, but the ZL is not getting the same love and postings. Your patience with a beginner question appreciated...

Starting with unlockable (but BL Locked) C6506 US variant on 434 version, is this the correct sequence:

1) Unlock BL (flashtool Beta 6 should do it, I already have the key, and have already backed up TA for DRM preservation just in case)

2) Update with SUS to 253 stock (I'm not clear if this is going to relock the boot loader or not? Unlock afterwards if so.

3) Install a recovery specifically for the ZL (such as the dual boot one)? Or figure out if I can get to fastboot in this state and use that, but then ...

4) Install this kernel (V7), which restores root (?)

Should I then take the C6506 files from SUS and build a flashable FTF and overlay baseband or others, or were they preserved from the above steps?

Note I don't care at all if I loose what is on the phone. Am just interested in getting to a rooted .253. If there's a shorter path let me know, but at least on paper the above doesn't look too bad if I've understood it correctly?

PS. I'm not exactly sure what components determine camera capabilities, and how that relates to the kernel vs. app; can I assume 253 stock with this kernel is the same as 253 stock with regard to camera processing quality?

Also read the TA backup thread before unlocking bootloader...

But be VERY CAREFUL... Playing with the TA area is EXTREMELY RISKY... It may even hard brick device!!!!

Sent from my LT30p using xda app-developers app

Yes, have read. I am not overly concerned about the DRM keys, but I have done multiple backups (with the script as well as flashtool) of the TA area. whether I will ever bother restoring or not, unsure.

I take it the rest is on track? I think I'll give it a try. I have my old GSII as a phone if I get it screwed up for a while, might was well dive in and see if I can get it all to work. Didn't buy an unlocked phone just to run stock, frankly.

Going to get a few before photos (i.e. to test camera) first, and maybe some screen images relative, to have a comparison.

1. Ur choice to unlock bootloader or keep ur bootloader locked (bootloader unlock will ease ur job)
2. U can just flash the .253 ftf file via flashtool. I never had any experience updating rom via SUS, so i can not comment whether it will work or not. What i know is, if ur bootloader unlocked u can't update via OTA, not sure whether SUS apply the same rule.
3. Just flash doomkernel v7 boot.img via flashtool (it has root feature for .253)
4. Ur done

Side note : doomkernel has kernel+recovery and what i understand you have to modified ur kernel and put it together with recovery, unlike HTC device where kernel and recovery can be flash separately (please correct me if i'm wrong)

In followup to a prior note, I want to post what worked for me since there's not a lot of ZL activity and it may help some others trying to follow the "Z" for the ZL. I am up and running and very happily rooted on 253.

Starting point: C6506, USA generic, BL locked but unlockable, version 10.1.A.1.434

Here's what worked, with comments on what did not:

1) I had Flashtool Beta 6 configured for the phone, drivers, etc.; I had used it to root 434.

2) Update to 253 with Sony Update Service. Confirmed on reboot it did the NFC update after the apps update (which it did).

- Note: First I unlocked the boot loader, and SUS refused to run, relocked and it would run, so if going this route leave it locked first.

- Note: I grabbed the files and made an FTF from this version; I have not tested it, but it can't hurt if you follow this path to do so. Instructions I used are her: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2188129 except I did not exclude any parts and it ran without error.

3) Unlock bootloader with Flashtool [Read carefully all the DRM / TA threads; I had backed mine up]

4) Download, extract to fastboot directory, Installed V7 of DooMKernel, using fastboot (attach phone in fastboot mode, enter commands as indicated in OP)

5) Boot into recovery (tap volume up as it boots)

6) Reboot from recovery -- it prompts to know if you want to root, I said yes -- root regained

After that I started reloading applications, pulling down from playstore, adfree, etc, and so far everything I have tried has worked perfectly.

I tried three times to have the playstore automatically restore my apps. First two times did not work, on the third I decided to try something else and turned off my backup phone (which was on the other two times) and it worked. Pure speculation whether that had an impact, to me it's always hit or miss whether the playstore automatically starts downloading the previously loaded apps. I did NOT use any backup programs, I just reconfigured everything after all the above.

The camera is DRAMATICALLY improved (I will find an appropriate place and post some examples made in carefully controlled conditions).

The screen to me is almost identical, I don't see the changes (other than blacker top and bottom bars) that everyone is raving about. I took photos (with a real camera in controlled lighting on a tripod) before and after and I just don't see it. I did not try to test viewing at an angle as I don't do that.

My presumption is I could lock and restore TA (actually think the latter does the former) and would be back to having DRM with root, but I haven't missed DRM so far, and can't see a difference (but did confirm it is gone).
