v 4.8.1 rooted my ATT T817A until I reboot! hope they can fix that soon, I'm shocked it worked at all.
would I be able install TWRP, like this?
No it will brick ur device.
If you are running 5.0.2 you can convert to supersu.
Also you may be able to convert to Kingoroot now you have root if you are 5.1.1. Maybe that will stick?
Before messing though make a full backup of your device with Efs pro.

ok, will install Efs pro and make a back up to my pc, when I get home trmw.
then install Kingoroot, and see how that does with retaining root.

too bad about TWRP, I was looking forwards to have xpossed framework flashed so I could use wanam to customize the daylights out of this tab!

why do you think it won't stick with kingroot?
did you even think root would happen on the AT&T T817A 5.1.1 ?

thanks for your advice!

No idea why kingroot doesn't stick. Maybe knox or probably selinux policy blocking it, this is why Chainfire patches it. Check with root validator to see what's missing.

You can still install xposed. Install it with Flashfire.
However ensure you install the correct version or potential bricking may occur, so get that backup first.

ok, so installed root validate and it had 2 issues...

do you think SELinuxModeChanger app would fix one of these issues?
edit: what a twisted piece of pie! needs root to disable selinux, however the tab losses root on reboot, the app needs to reboot after the change to set it.

Is that before or after root stops working? There is no issue there as far as I can see.
Need to see the result after reboot and root stops working.
Also you won't be able to change selinux modes unless you have a kernel that allows it or install a permissive kernel. You don't need to reboot to change modes either it's instant.

that one is while root is working, the one that is after a reboot, shows all yellow, no root, and no busybox, and no SU.
I thought that selinux was causing me to loss the root? It looks like everything is just gone! like selinux wiped it out on reboot. i am going to still type in a term script to stop it. i found it here....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/how-to-set-selinux-to-permissive-boot-t3034245/page2

Also flashfire is looking for SU or CM SU, it doesn't recognise the Kingroot SU, and i'm not sure how to get around that.

still trying to figure out the efs pro, it doesn't find my tab while connected and in download mode, but the PC sees it.....
I'm just so excited to have root, want to make it perm, so we can theme and tweak!

Yep flashfire requires supersu. Something you can't have on 5.1.1 or you'll boot loop.
Efs pro needs adb drivers installed and usb debugging enabled in development settings.
Make sure your device is detected by adb by doing ADB DEVICES in terminal.
Also that script you refer to won't work. Samsung forces selinux to enforcing in 5.1.1 and cannot be changed without a modified kernel.

so I cant have it after all!

I will check the drivers and verify its seen by adb

yeap found out the script is useless.......
Back in the same boat! root is only temporary......

Did you try Kingoroot?

Yes, for the past 5 hours......
i tried kingoroot app version
then the PC version
then kingroot PC version
none were able to root the Tab, and yet the kingroot 4.8 app can root this tab, not always on the 1st try, but by the 3rd for sure.... i've tried removing the kingoroot su files, i tried renaming them, and then updated SU, but every time, it wants me to use TWRP to update the binaries, and or once i reboot i loss root!

this is very frustrating....

We can get temp root with kingroot 4.8 (lose root after a reboot). I guess we have to flash the permissive kernel to keep permanent root. But again this will trip the KNOX.

Those who have 5.0.1 may be ok.

Are rooting with kingOroot when you already have root or without root?
You need to get root first with kingroot then root again with KingORoot .
Kingroot may attempt to block it, but you could follow the procedure I posted to replace it with SuperSU, but replace it with KingORoot instead.
Dont try and replace it with supersu unless you want a bootloop.

Follow steps 3 to 8.
However you will need to modify the script to run kingoroot at the end instead of supersu or when supersu runs cancel it and then start kingroot from the terminal window.

The other option is to remove kingroot first by using its uninstaller then try and root with Kingoroot.

ROOTED T715Y 5.0.2 (wish had this available earlier)

Any progress on getting the root to work and not trip knox?
just confirmed...rooted T715Y 5.0.2 (had restored back to stock twice flashed 2 firmwares through odin, factory reset all clean but of course knox tripped once from an earlier flash of twrp recovery--then used supersu from chainfire (the experimental one that works on some 5.1.1)-not the cfroot)

well now on a clean unrooted stock....4.8.1 apk version of kingroot worked...rooted verified by root explorer
