None of the fixes seem to be permanent, after a few days google services is again the biggest power drain. Enabling Stamina Mode does seem to work, but has its bigger drawbacks.

Meanwhile I believe Play Services is not the underlying cause of the battery drain. Interestingly on the Xperia seems to have the battery drain issue, I haven't seen it reported as a major issue anywhere else. Could it be that one of the Sony-Apps is the root cause, likely invoking Play Services way too often? In that case we'll have to wait until they get their act together!
My drain is gone for more then 2-3 week already, and heavy use..

Hats off??? HEADS OFF I would say... after more than one month they should have a really good explanation. My phone was working perfectly before the damm update to 4.4 and it looks that is not googles fault.
This has happened because they have priority on Z1 and Z2, but one thing is taking more time to release the updates, and other very different leaving your phone useless after a update for more than one month....

I tried everything and the drain always come back.

Sony told us how to Eliminate the drain, so it seems that its a Google bug that they can clearly see what is happening, but it could be that Google will never change the behaviour of Play Services which would mean Sony and every other Manufacturer would have to come up with something brand new that would show some sort of old location when your phone can't locate itself the way play services wants to.

Root your z, install "disable service" from playstore, disabled the locationsservices from google play services, i did every service which contained the word locations, also some other, see my screenshot few posts above. It worked perfect for me. I also disabled google play movies, Google play books, and google+ Btw.
In standby far over 10 days now.. I hope it will help you also. Cheers

Thanks a lot,! but I use my gps several times a day :(
I think most of the users wont accept disabling it.
Dont know, i didn't want to root it at first because of warranty etc. But the drain almost let me throw my phone since with normal use i could do 8 hrs with my phone. Now, when i don't use it, it is standby for say 10 or more days and with normal use i easily do a day and a half with a charge now.., so for me it was worth it. I dont use the location function at all, so for me it was a perfect Solution. Batteryuse overnight is now say 1% in 7-8 hours...

Haven't had the battery drain since the updated Google Play Services landed to be honest, battery life on my Z is now excellent.

Relevant settings I have are:

Google Location Reporting ON
Location Services ON
DEVICE MODE ONLY, so uses the onboard GPS. I use this all the time for navigation and various Golf yardage apps, haven't had a problem in ages.

Not sure I'd lay the blame on Sony's door as a) other manufacturers are seeing this b) The Google update seems to have done wonders.

Same here, no drain at all with the same settings as you. The only drawback is that some of the Google now cards doesn't work.

I read all over the forums this battery drain bug is a Kit Kat bug introduced by Sony or Google, but the fact is that i have not updated to Kit Kat yet, and i am experiencing the same thing, Google Play Services are eating my battery since about a month ago, and it has been all of a sudden.

I thing Google really screwed up something, and i am sick of this situation. I love Sony and Xperia devices, but i am not sure my next phone will be an Android.

You are correct RoberM. For my device the drain started as soon as Google Play was updated to version 4.8.20. I had to disable the location services to counter the battery drain. I am from India and I think we were the last ones to get the KK Update!!

I updated my firmware to KK but I have still not enabled the location service. I have observed on my phone that Bluetooth also takes a good amount of battery, about 25% now. I use SBH-20 everyday and this drain was not present in the earlier version.

Seriously, Im sick and tired of this problem.
I never experience this on the Z2.
So far, drain can be fixed temporarily by force stopping but then comes back after a few hours.
