OK, I decided to take the plunk and give the 2.6 kernel version a try, but seems like I did something wrong.

I'm starting from Quarx's 20130917 4.3 version, so I guessed I should upgrade TWRP as instructed in the first post. I downloaded update-recovery.zip, installed it and rebooted. However, TWRP's version stayed at 2.6.3.0. Since the updated version number isn't noted at the first post, I was wondering if anyone who had successfully installed 4.4 (and therefore upgraded TWRP as required) could pass me the right install instructions and the TWRP version I should end with.
The version number remains the same. If you look inside the update zip, you'll see that it actually contains a kernel, not a recovery. So don't worry about the TWRP version.

The number of version stay the same. You will see if everything is ok , flashing. If the recovery isn't the right, you'll get an error. And if it's the right, there wouldn't be a problem.

I have downloaded cm-11-20131124-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip three times, checked its MD5SUM, flashed the update-recovery.zip and rebooted twice, and I still can't install the nightly. I'm getting the following error:

Code:
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
E: Error executing updater binary script in zip '/sdcard/KK/cm-11-20131124-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip'
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/KK/cm-11-20131124-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip'
Updating partition details...

Try to update recovery, reboot and flash it again, as mentioned in the OP:

For CM10,10.1,10.2 < 07.11.13 users:
To install KitKat, need update recovery. Do not forget reboot, after install recovery.

If you are on cm10 or cm10.1 you need to flash cm10.2 as base. Then update-recovery, and then cm11

What helped me to install KitKat on my Defy Green Lens:
- downloading update_recovery.zip by DEFY in DEFY browser,
- downloading the ROM by DEFY in DEFY browser,
- installed update-recovery.zip through TWRP.

BIG thanks to TJKV for help!

Version number changes actually. Slimbean 1.8 had 2.6.0.0 and all CM before that and with the update.zip comes 2.6.3.0. I just checked.

Ok, am I blind or what. I installed latest kitkat 11.24 with old 2.3 kernel and 11-24GApps_Core_4.4_signed.zip

Now, sync do not work and I do not have even market. Thats a real core lol. Question is what gapps to use to have at least market and i would like to enable ART. How, where? Thanks
You need to delete some unnecessary CM11 system apps (I deleted Apollo, Calculator, etc) then reflash Gapps. Better to wipe cache/dalvik before and after flashing.

I have this same error.
I also have cm10.2 installed and TWRP updated to 2.6.3.0, but no way even after a system/data wipe.
Days ago I finally succeded installing cm11 after full SBF --> 2ndinit --> 2.6.3.0 TWRP. Now that I reverted back to the previous cm10.2 backup+2.6.3.0 TWRP I get this error again.

Hey guys, I've finally been able to test @YetAnotherForumUser's script, and the attached safewipe.zip will wipe /data /cache and /system while leaving the bootmenu and recovery bits intact :)

You can use these to do a clean install, it's safer than the full wipe zip that we use around here (at least, I used to use it). Rebooting immediately after wiping will not lead to the phone being stuck on the Moto logo, Bootmenu and TWRP recovery will remain usable to flash ROMs etc.
How does this script differ from the Defy Ultimate Wipe?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818520

Does it just keep bootmenu and recovery safe?

@Quarx @Blechd0se bar code scanner works perfectly on red lens defy even though the camera does not.... Also the camera preview also had inverted colours like youtube. I can get rid off inverted colours in mxplayer by switching to software decoding. However the same cannot be achieved with youtube or other apps using selective hwa
