Not yet, didn't get the time. I will try it tomorrow and update you.
@fuchrist I downloaded your link to "moto_defy_RSD_DRV.rar" and have tried the phone in ALL USB ports but RSD Lite still won't recognise it, nor any acknowledgement from Windows. The phone always appears in the same place in Device Manager under "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)" > "USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)" > "Motorola Flash Interface". The motherboard is "Z97-P" if that's worth mentioning. The phone seems to recognise it's connected because it changes from "Connect USB Data Cable" to "Transfer Mode: USB". I also tried installing "RSD Lite 6.1.5", but no change at all.
Yes, follow the first post and use the updated new_bootstrap.zip & resize.zip files
https://drive.google.com/drive/mobil...mdFSkp2aWNmUDQ
, but before it boot to TWRP (make nandroid backup of data if you plan to need it) and wipe cache, Dalvik, data (factory reset).

I actually also had the problem with an Intel USB 3.0 controller. Even now my laptop does not find the phone if I'm using that controller. As soon as I plug it into my USB 2.0 controller, it's not problem at all. Maybe there are some weird driver issues going on there. And are you in the bootloader (Power Button + Volume Up) while you're trying to connect? Do you have access to another computer where you could try to check whether this is a driver issue?
@fuchrist On the third computer (an old XP one) I managed to get RSD Lite to recognise the phone. I downloaded an SBF file from https://firmware.center/firmware/Motorola/Defy+ (MB526)/Stock/ but there are so many to choose from with no obvious differences between them, I just went with the first one (DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-125_BLUR_SIGN_SIGNED_UCADEFYEMARAB1B80AA004.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNGIBRRTES_P025_A023_M002_HWp3_WIG148097_Service1FF.sbf.gz) and it seems to have restored it to factory defaults.
I have no early blue light to be able enter the early bootmenu now though. In the Power+Volume Down menu It fails to install the TWRP file you kindly shared, am I missing a step or is there a better SBF file available? ideally one with KitKat ready to go!? Thanks.
I'm happy that you're phone is alive again. I felt bad since I guided you towards that misery. So first of all: I only suggested the files that actually bricked your Defy since the others did not work. For your next attempt, you should use the files that I summarized in post #7957.
Regarding TWRP:
You're back to stock now and I'm assuming that you have not rooted the Defy yet. Pretty neat instruction for rooting and installing TWRP are provided here (root) and here (TWRP).
I hope this helps, let me know if you're successful.
You certainly don't need to feel bad, it's not my primary phone and now I know I can always go back to factory settings if all else fails. I'm extremely grateful for all of your help! :good:
I have installed Framaroot-1.9.3.apk and everything was successfully running that. I then followed your second link and installed SndInitDefy_2.3.apk (which I'm not sure if I should have done because I noticed afterwards that the next section is about TWRP? although the download links are dead). I get the blue LED menu now which takes me to "Android Bootmenu <v1.1.8-jordan>", and Recovery followed by Custom Recovery leads me to "CyanogenDefy Recovery v5.0.3.1-jordan". This fails to install new_bootstrap.zip though.
That's actually the way that is suggested here.
Have you tried to install the TWRP 2.6.3 instead of 2.8? The resource where you downloaded 2.8 actually indicates that 2.8 was installed using 2.6.3 ("AFTER updating TWRP from 2.6 to 2.8 with NO PROBLEMS").
Maybe installing 2.6.3 before 2.8 will do the trick!
Thanks TWRP 2.6.3 installed and running. If 2.8 isn't required then I don't want to push my luck. The link you shared shows two options but doesn't make it very clear what the actual differences are. Are they both KitKat but first is more stable than the second? or is there more to it than that? although the first one is "recommended" while the other is "highly recommended"?
It's all about builds before and after the 23rd of September 2014. I actually didn't really look into the exact changes, but I'm assuming that resizing partitions was required as the builds grew in size (remember, the Defy started with Android 2) and required more and more disk space. I'd recommend you to install the latest build, which essentially requires option 2. You should probably follow Quarx' original instructions (post #1 of this thread) which involves some more reboots.
Regarding TWRP: Give it a shot with 2.6.3 if you feel more comfortable. I don't know the changes but hopefully it would just display an error message if 2.8 is required. I flashed it with 2.8 and everything worked fine.
Bingo! I left it with 2.6.3, all other installs went through without a hitch, now running KitKat 4.4.4! Thank you so much for your help! I've bumped your Thanks Meter up a few, I'd buy you a pint or two if I could! :highfive:
You're welcome!
Let me know how your battery lifetime is. Which GApps did you flash?![]()
Alternatively, you can use Yalp, or microG (if some apps require some Google like services to run)
Thanks I'll keep these in mind, probably need something at some point.
I don't suppose anyone knows a good source of genuine Motorola (presumably new old stock) batteries for this phone in the UK? It would be great to have a spare!
I don't think that you will be able to buy an original Motorola battery. You may search for hf5x batteries on amazon, ebay, aliexpress, ... and just choose one with good ratings...
I have tried a couple from eBay and they have both been cheap Chinese copies or second hand ones, neither of which hold the charge for very long at all.
Also, how can I enable gesture typing with this new update? it's enabled in the settings, and the trail appears on the keyboard while gesturing, but the words don't actually appear onscreen?
EDIT: Installed Swype and that seems to work fine.

Thanks for problem list@Quarx: Thanks a lot for todays nightly, which is running very stable and smooth so far! :victory:
For your next nightly, could you probably look after bugs #3 and #5? Both should be easily fixable, because in my bug list I already pointed to the necessary patches, and some of us are really missing the torch tile - after all, this would bring a light to all of us in the wait for Christmas!![]()
