There's a trick you have to use to get ART working properly.

You have to install Gapps seperately from 4.4.

Basically you get 4.4 installed, boot up for the first time and enable ART. Then go back into recovery and intall Gapps. I'm not sure if there's anything else you need to do. Here's the original procedures..... Kayant

Seperately... Is there any way to change the launcher's settings? I don't remember being able to change them in the 02/12 build. I at least want to enable home screen rotating and remove icon labels...
It worked, but it switched back to dalvik. This is my steps.

1. Installed latest nightly.
2. Booted up, switched to art.
3. Reboot
4. Go to recovery, flash gapps without flash.
5. Boot with FC
6. Go to recovery, factory reset (wipe cache, data, dalvik)
7. After boot I got setup with no fc, but in developers switched back to ART.

Did I made a mistake somewhere?

You can try to modify your ramdisk(google for procedure) to see if this really works. I didn't test it so I'm not sure.:p

At the moment I'm trying to build AOSP based on Quarx repo with all recent fixes included, but the newly integrated chromium is really a big thing that takes much more time than jb to build.
Thanks for this hint!

I really would like to modify the ramdisk myself as long as Quarx hasn't integrated the fix yet. :)

Unfortunately, I'm using a Windows 7 and not a Linux PC. From googeling how to modify the ramdisk, I saw that most instructions are for Linux.

I even found instructions and a toolset for Windows under http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2073775, but this doesn't work because the compression method of our ramdisk is reported as "empty" (don't know if this means that there is no special compression algorythm involved) and the toolset does not seem to be compatible with this compression method.

I would be happy if someone else could manage to modify our ramdisk with this fix, so that apps on sd finally work under Kitkat on our Defy's. :)

Is there anyone with a Linux environment (maybe @Kayant, since you surely are gifted enough ;)) to give it a try?

I already have the latest cm build's ramdisk decompiled here (comparing to slimkat for debugging), i'll upload in a few minutes :)

EDIT: Okay attached. remove the ".gz" (xda needs extension to upload). Added ",noemulatedsd" to the fstab file, that's it.

I finally got into the Kitkat wagon for Defy. Though things are smooth so far, I have noticed a few things:

1. Cannot make AM/PM visible in status bar
2. Battery percentage with icon not included
3. Clock/weather widget does not work in lock screen
4. Baseband won't save from Advanced options
5. Booting time is very long

Also, I am using Dalvik. I tried ART for sometime but did not notice any significant difference. Is the boost negligible?

Do you have XPosed Framework installed? It forces the switch back to dalvik.

Which things does not work in yesterday's nightly? So bluetooth is working again ("02.12.13 CM: Fix camera, fix usb/bt")? And with a modified fstab/ramdisk SD works also? So everything works?
Could I use the same gapps (if ther's enough space) I used all the time with android 4.3?

No, pure kitkat from zip with gapps no additional apps. I will try to activate ART again, but I think it will throw FCs again.
Flash the ROM only and boot it up once, switch to ART.
Reboot into the ROM. This bootup takes a long time.
Reboot to recovery and flash ART compatible gapps and any other addon
Reboot
from the slimkat-thread. Haven't tried it yet so not sure if this works.

To those who are successfully on ART, can you guys enlighten us a bit? Tried so many guides but failed. The fc problem occurs only after gapps installed. Which one do you use? Banks? Core or Standard?

Start from a fresh installation with Banks Core (26-11 works well).
Do not log into your google account. Skip the setup, then go into settings, switch to ART, reboot.
You will get some FCs. Then, wipe cache and dalvik - it will take sometime on boot again, but the FCs will be gone.
This time you can log into your google account and start working properly

i use banks "11-26_GApps_Core_4.4_signed.zip". as many says, try to wipe dalvik & cache.
good luck!

I haven't even tried switching over to ART yet... it works blazingly fast as it is. :)
Does ART really give a noticeable boost? Wondering if it's worth the hassle.. :)

To not be too much off-topic: I can confirm that the cLock widget on the lockscreen doesn't work properly. It shows the correct time and date, but ignores all the settings.

Step 6 is wrong. You should wipe only cache and dalvik.
If you wipe data the dev settings come to original. That's why is coming from ART back to dalvik.
