The Note 7 was literally perfect in its design, the Note 8 will take some getting used to.
the N7 really was perfect in design. and as I use my N8 with the enormous, beautiful clear screen, I imagine how much more wonderful the N7 would have been without the huge button. it was my most perfect phone. so glad virtual buttons are back. I've already adapted and you'll adapt quickly too.

This is why I love xda. I installed it and now my ugly light gray nav bar is black. Between this and finding about about the hard press home button, I now have zero complaints about the navbar, aside from the fingerprint scanner which I know I'll get used to. Thanks to you guys, my love affair with this bad boy starts right now.
that's how I felt until I heard about this. now I have it hiding and black. I'm in love with this thing.

Is your a snap dragon or exynos and did you reboot before looking for the setting. I'm using a T-Mobile variant snap dragon. I also think different carriers have different settings on the same device.
I have a T-Mobile note 8 too. I rebooted also. I still can't see the slider to adjust it

While I can understand the draw of having no physical home button (more screen, yay), it has already annoyed me a few times while typing and and trying to hit the space bar and instead hitting the button.

Maybe there is a stronger sensitivity setting that I missed?

Anyone done this a lot yet? I also noticed that the ability to hide the bar stops as soon as you have the keyboard open...
I thought I would have a serious issue with not having a physical home button as my previous phones were a Note 4 and a Huawei Mate S. I had to get the Mate S because my Note 4 failed (memory issues) and therefore left me without a physical home button.
I think that got me used to the fact that the N8 has no physical buttons but even after a couple days of use I've gotten used to it pretty quickly. Sometimes a little dot on the bottom left of the button bar appears and if you tap it twice it disappears. Swipe up from the charging port to make it reappear.

I'd prefer a physical button but that could be simply habit. I'm sure I'll get used to the lack of one on this because it really is a great phone.

absolutely but even more so is the lack of fingerprint on the front. If I put it in my dock in the car I can't unlock with fingerprints :/

I am aware, and that was just an example. I have found numerous times including trying to use PAY where I have to fumble to get it unlocked due to fingerprint unlock in the rear :/ That is a HUGE negative IMHO
I hear you it took a little getting use it the finger print scanners placement. I am used to it now and it works every time fast for me. They should have put it in the middle or under the front glass. Next year it will be under the front glass I read. I use Samsung pay all the time with no problems. But also I have big hands so it is no problem for me to reach it.

Then I strongly suggest you don't purchase the Note 8. There are still, at present, mobiles available with what you desire. Why inflict yourself onto a device that you know will cause you stress?

Didn't say it would cause me stress. I said i prefer a physical button.
The iPhone 8 would be perfect for you with the same 2007 old school design.

The scanner works pretty reliably and fast for me. Not as instantaneous as my One plus 3t but not even the Pixel is that fast. I'm happy with it. Placement is another story. It's in such an awkward place that I don't even use it for unlocking, which is a shame. With the OnePlus 3t, I just pick up my phone and tap the sensor and I'm in. I miss that. But honestly, it's such a minor concession that it absolutely will not tarnish my experience with the Note 8.

To me, the Note 7 was perfect with the exception of the replaceable battery.. well and the whole recall thing. But it didn't have the extra Bixby button, and had a fingerprint scanner on the front that used a physical button.

At least the Iris Scanner is more accurate with the Note 8 than it was with the 7. Unlocks the phone pretty quick.

I am having problems swiping up for the navbar and it hits other apps. Or especially if I'm like text messaging and I swipe and my keyboard comes up. I made the nav bar stay on and it helps but I lose the real estate. Hope with root we can disable the navbar and use 3rd party nav bar on the side.
You can press the home button was and it will take you home. You don't have to swipe up then tap the home. It's all based on the pressure you put.

Personally I never had trouble hitting the home button when pressing the space bar.

You can change the sensitivity of how hard you have to press to engage the home button.

My iris scanner sucks. I don't know if it's my device but it does not work that great for me. The face scanner works better but I heard its not that secure. Finger print works fine for me and with smart lock it's a breeze.

Also I liked the Note 7 but I like the 8 more. It's wider than the 7 was. That was one thing I did not like about the 7.
