It is very possible to buy an extremely capable laptop now-a-days for between $500-$800. Yes the XOOM is impressive spec wise (for tablets) at the moment but a month after its release the iPad 2 will be here and suddenly Moto's offering won't exactly be "****ting" on anything anymore.

Also, I just want to be clear that I'm not saying the iPad is better than the XOOM or any other Android offering, I'm just trying to look at this from a general consumer's point of view.

This was completely unnecessary, no one is attacking you personally here. Also, a quick look through this thread would prove you wrong. Not to mention that most of the posts here bring up good points and are well written. We may have less posts than you but that doesn't mean much if you pride yourself on posting 'quality' comments such as this.
Haha the internet police. Anyways I'm not talking about ipad 2. Ipad 1 is out and the 32gb cost 729, now the zoom has better specs and cost 699. Yes the xoom is ****ting on ipad 1 and costs less.

LoL internet police...
I won't argue that it's better than the iPad 1 but what does that matter when the iPad 2 is just around the corner and will likely match if not beat the xoom for specs.

I'm only arguing that the current price we think it is, isn't that bad that was my point, as for the ipad 2 it will probably match the xoom specs but I still prefer android over ios. Also no matter what the specs it still wont play flash content

Have you used an Ipad?

You guys are mostly wrong, did you even look at ipad prices? This thing is priced competitively and is ****ting on the ipad in terms of specs, so you expect something with massive spec bump to be cheaper, I'm confused. And high end laptops don't cost anywhere around $700. You're comparing a cheap laptop to the highest spec tablet out there, nor do I believe you guys are looking at the full potential of tabs, by the end of the year your tab will be like another screen in your home with Comcast for 1 example, $700 and I'm getting one on day 1. To the Guy who said this should cost less then the ipad, that's a fucking joke right?
There is NO reason to "Outspec" the Ipad. It works flawlessly. I'm an Android guy and will not pay more than a netbook price for a netbook without a keyboard. And no one else will either. I am typing this on my Dell Mini9 by the way that cost me $300. Tablets are gadgets and toys, not PC replacements. When i want to do some serious PC work I use my desktop with the quad core I5 chip. These are toys and toys don't cost $700.

Actually its a tablet and the highest end tablet. I'm pretty sure there are $300 or less tablets also. You're typing that on a low end netbook which is why its $300. Some Sony laptops cost $1800, so $700 highend tablet and $1800 high end laptop are not in the same price range. Also tablets and PC's will have completely different functions and uses. Same example I gave earlier, I work for Comcast and pretty soon our ipad and Google tablet app will allow you to walk around your house with your tablet as if its another monitor or television. That's not coming to laptops or desktops, that's just one example. With the 720p playback that feature will get used all the time in my house

Is there anything like a "high end" netbook?? A netbook is a netbook. If you paid 1800 for your Sony, kudos to you. I got a Samsung QX with a Core i5 and Optimus switching graphics for 699.99 during the holidays. Even an Asus G73, a 17.3" monster of a laptop with an i7 and 1GB Radeon 5870 (GDDR5) a friend of mine got for less than 1200. Even a HP dv series Phenom 930 Quadcore lappie i can get for 849-ish...

I agree with most of what you're saying here. But this product will not be competing with the iPad, it will be competing with the iPad 2, which will be just about damn similar in specs. I guess the thing on the price that was getting me initially was that this is 32 gigs worth of storage from the get go. I wouldn't mind seeing Moto go the Apple route and offer a 16 gig version as well. For what I would be purchasing this for I don't know that I'd necessarially use all that storage. Plus, with Android's micro SD slots I can always add additional storage if I ever need it down the line.

Now this makes sense, offer a 16gb then of course you can charge less or a wifi only then I can fully understand a cheaper price but we will have to wait on that. Also the microsd slot on the xoom doesn't work yet, you will have to wait for the 4g update before you will be able to take advantage of the SD slot

I think the concern is Motorola has to offer a $499 or lower version to compete with the ipad. Having only a higher specd version for more will not work in the long run. All this is speculation and we will find out in a few weeks. The good thing is there are many manufacturers shipping HC tablets like LG, Toshiba and Asus so there will be enough competition to keep the prices competitive

I do specifically want the Xoom, but I think I'll have to wait for the wifi version anyhow. I don't want a data plan on it, since I'll have my phone for that, and $800 is going to be too steep when you consider I'm buying a Droid Bionic and a Nintendo 3DS in the next couple months as well.

What no one has mentioned is that this price COULD also come with the need for some type of data plan. Even Verizon's unsubsidized Galaxy Tab required at least one month of data. What we really need here is for Motorola to sell a wi-fi only unit, with no ties to any of the carriers, for something south of $500. I would think that would be the biggest sweet spot as most folks who would buy this type of gadget would have the product and know how to tether their phone to it when wi-fi is not available.

And $500 for the highest end tablet seems reasonable. At least to me.

I think that many here are missing what I believe will be a large target audience for the Xoom: the corporate customer.

More and more businesses are finding practical uses for tablets, especially for their mobile workforce. However, the iPad is frowned upon in many places because it requires iTunes and is designed for media consumption more than anything else, not to mention Apple's well-designed, very attractive, walled-garden.

Android tablets do not have those limitations, and I just read that Honeycomb will come with some functionality that will appease the security-minded, such as full encryption (though the exact protocol hasn't been specified) and IT-policy enforcement.

For many businesses, a tablet with 3- or 4G connectivity, instant-on capability, Exchange synchronization, a large screen, long battery life, and no walled-garden can be a very useful tool. I plan on ordering one of these devices on day 1 and using the full 30 days to evaluate it in our environment.

I have been using a Galaxy Tab for a few months, and though I like the device, both the smaller screen size (vs Zoom) and 2.2 OS don't quite make it for business use.

I guess some BestBuy regional manager posted some internal release dates for the Xoom. People are speculating the 17th for a Verizon 'store' release date, then Best Buy one week later.

Ugh... if this is true... I dont know if I can hold our for 7 days so I can get my $600-800 reward zone points!! My goal is getting BB silver membership for the 45 day return policy... At the rate of new Android releases, I can probably get a new device every 6 weeks!

I wish some people would stop complaining about the "high" price of the Xoom. Its a high end device with a justifiable high end price. How much did your smartphone cost retail?... unsubsidized, probably around $500. This is a high performing 10.1" tablet, 2-3 times larger than your touchscreen phone and with Android 3.0, and a hell of a lot better than the supposedly "comparable" $500 wifi ipad. And unlike the ipad, you can upgrade your memory w/out upgrading the whole damn device. $799 OR $699 is a steal. So save up. And if you can't afford it, then you are window shopping at the wrong store.

well, a lot of people are understandably concerned over the price of the tablet, but no one actually knows the price yet. All this speculation isn't getting you anywhere lol. The same thing happened with the ipad before launch. Rumors about it costing upwards of 1200...

When the galaxy tab came out what did it cost off/on contact, and what was the cost to cancel that contact with t mobile? Instead of paying 700 for the tab, it actually costed 500 (300 for the galaxy tab +200 etf) if you just canceled the contact. Same thing goes here, and hits closer to the general consensus of what we think the price point should be, if the unsubsidized price is actually 700. You may only have to pay 650. Hopefully vzw doesn't up their etf again.

Hopefully they don't make a **** move, and have it subsidized to 350... Then it will cost the same either way.

Yes! Completely agree. $200-300 difference from a smartphone, is that too much?
