Because all of the android stock launchers are freaking butt ugly. Especially the ICS version. It's no wonder why htc uses sense and Samsung touchwiz. Because if they tried to sell phones with stock android launchers they wouldn't sell many phones. Believe it out not, most of the phone buying world feels this way. For the most part, only the hardcore android fan boys like the stock launcher.

Wrong. Most of the world just doesn't know what the hell they're buying and don't have any choices, as manufacturers don't sell phones without skins. Further, marketing goes entirely to brand differentiation, of which skinning is a large part. Sense is bloated and slow and Touchwiz just looks like iOS. Performance with stock Android is far better than skinned, aside from Sammy's hw accelerated browser, which is moot with ICS.

On Gingerbread, Launcher Pro is still the best and smoothest launcher. I really hope that Fede has been working on re-writing the whole app and making it compatible for ICS.
I wouldn't hold your breath. Fede initially indicated he would roll out the rewrite in Q1 2011, then "within a few months", and now it's New Years Eve. I think it's a dead app.. Just as well, as I'm more than satisfied with stock ICS, or if I get bored, I can try Trebuchet.

I don't like a lot of crap cluttering my screen. I prefer multiple scrolling docks with all my shortcuts to putting them on my screen. That's my biggest complaint with the stock browser. I also like to hide all the apps in the app drawer that I have on the dock because I feel having the apps in two places causes clutter (which I previously mentioned I dislike).

I can pull over 3000 in quadrant running launcher pro running oICSv43 without any forced closing issues and everything butter smooth. Do I really need to be any faster than that? Besides, the stock launcher didn't run quadrant any faster. So it it's moot.

Anyone knows of a calendar widget similar to the LPP one? Am interested in seeing the calendar where I can keep flipping horizontally to move from month to month.

Thanks :)

The stock ICS launcher is garbage compared to LPro.
No resizing widgets
No hiding apps in the drawer
Only 5 quick launch icons
No hiding the notification bar

I re-installed LPro and started tweaking from it's default settings - hopefully it's just the calendar widget that's crapping out but I've had no trouble so far.

I really hope he makes it fully functional on ics. He doesn't have to add or change anything imo, just make it 100% ics compatible. Anyone who doesn't think lpp is the smoothest, fastest, launcher needs to get their eyes checked.

Hate to break it to you but LPP is dead. Fede (the developer) hasn't updated his site in 14months+ and has been "working on a total rewrite" for almost 2 years with no eta or signs of progress.

I can't agree. It's all about tastes I think... According to me most of skinned launchers are really ugly and graphically outdated. Especially if compared to the stock ICS one, which looks pretty professional. What I like most is that this time the launcher look is well integrated into the system. Touchwiz is a shame, it features horrible color combinations and looks like a bad attempt of iOS emulation. Blur looks bad to me, xperia's home is nothing special. Sense features a well designed ecosystem, it's the only skinned launcher which deserves a chance. Anyway I couldn't state that stock offers a good choice of features: it definitely lacks many. Just to mention some: icon replacement, resize on every widget, dock pages, matted icon labels, power notification widget... That's why I went with Trebuchet and cyanogenmod.

I've been using LPP for years now, and I love some of the features...

Now that I'm on ICS, I really miss the calendar widget (since it is the FC culprit).

My question is - do any of these other launchers have the following features:
  • Swipe gesture on the dock icons - I use this to show notifications because my 160 density makes my notification bar pretty small and difficult to grab.
  • Resize widgets - I like to run 5x7, and always re-size my digital clock widget so it's centered.
  • Custom icons in the dock - self explanatory...

...and lastly, if multiple alternative launchers have all of these features - which one is better (and why)?

Thanks in advance!

I'm a fan of ADW launcher. The pro version is definitely worth the money. The only thing that LPP has on ADW is the widgets and you can get Android Pro Widgets if you want them.

I used to love LPP but it's pretty much dead now, unfortunately.

Just try the combo of Apex Launcher (Play Store)
- swipe gestures on homescreen to show notifiction bar are configurable
- widget resizing
- custom icons
and Android Pro Widgets (Play Store), which I think has all the widgets LPP has as LPP widget themes also work for APW.

delete data/cache from your play store app. if that doesn't work, log out of your google acct & log back in. this is a common error that is usually corrected by one of those steps.

I cleared the data on play store and no - go, and I didn't find a way to log out of play store, but I found it by googling it :) It works nice. Now I have my LauncherPro Plus VERY similar to what I had it. Only difference I noticed was instead of scrolling with the finger I need to press the little arrows on the bottom section, no biggie.

Thanks.
