A LOT of major Android devices will get the notch this year. If you remember, Google added support for the notch recently.
So manufacturers sre going to do it.
If OnePlus 6T has it, I guess I'm getting a notch too.

Remember, Android had it first.

Notch, unibrow, or whatever you want to call it. When it creeps in on the screen, I will pretty much always pass on it. I think Xiaomi's Mi Mix 2s would be the only exception. It isn't so much of a notch though. The front-facing camera module is in the top corner, which takes a slight little bit out of the corner. Still not acceptable but as close to acceptable as I would settle for.

But one article said some Chinese budget OEMs were not only doing the notch to copy Apple, but making it BIGGER than "necessary" (it's never necessary) as actually style statement. Argghhhhhh.

I hated it on the Essential also.

And I already hate OnePlus for being a "pretender" -- not a real premium phone -- so there's another reason to not like them.

You should have been expecting the clones to come out. iPhone X was a huge disappointment for sales. Apple is discontinuing it in June and reduced their order which made Samsung hold the bag on millions of glass. Samsung is not going to throw them away but they were already shopping around for buyers at a reduced rate. Why not spend the same amount of money on a good piece of glass. And just deal with the notch as a designer. When you are selling a mid-tier phone having a nice glass is a bonus. And honestly LG is a mid-tier company that puts out high-end devices.

I did find this:

https://9to5google.com/2018/02/28/lg-g7-neo-mwc-leak-specs-display-notch/
The display measures in at 6-inches with a resolution of 3120 x 1440. As Android Police points out, that’s a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, different from the G6 and V30 which both have 18:9 aspect ratios. The closest comparison would the Essential Phone’s 19:10 aspect ratio.

In short, it’s slightly taller, and that actually makes room for a notch which has been added to the display (because of course).

Interestingly, LG hides the notch in software, creating its own version of the notification bar that is somewhat reminiscent of the second-screen on the LG V20.
So, the "notch" will be in area not really being used. It won't impact videos, etc. That space will be used for notification bar.

The REAL part of the display is still 18:9.

That doesn't make me like the notch, but it's not just putting a notch to put a notch.

Be interesting to see it next to the iPhone X. To me that sounds like they adapted their software to work with the notch having bought lots of glass on the cheap. Which I have to say was a pretty good way of doing it. I don't got time to research actual size dimensions today

I don't think anyone would put a notch to put a notch. Apple did it because their sheep won't say anything negative about the design. Just how awesome the feature is. At least LG was smarter and used space better

Apple put a notch there just to put a notch there. :p LG didn't do that on V30 and Samsung has not on S8, S8+, Note 8, S9, S9+ -- in spite of having the minimal bezels. Apple's notch serves no real purpose and interferes with apps. Whereas on the G7 (I can't believe I'm defending this), the "notch" portion is really a "2nd notification screen" like the V20 had.

The LG V30 Is As Underrated As The iPhone X Is Overrated
that (iPhone X) notch that takes a chunk out of the screen when viewing videos; there are plenty of important apps still not optimized around the notch (like Gmail) and they look terrible
Essential's notch cut the expected QHD 1440p to 1325p, so Essential ALSO put a notch there just to put a notch there. It's not necessary.

Some of the Chinese budget phones have put a notch there just to put a notch there. An article just a few days ago said many made the notch much bigger than "necessary", to put a huge gap there on purpose as a form of stylistic exaggeration.

Oukitel U18.

One even is running GINGERBREAD, in 2018. Many have the notch, but are cutting their clock off in the upper right.

They don't care.

The Clone Wars: iPhone X copycats battle for notch supremacy
https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/2/28/17062030/iphone-x-clones-android-mwc-2018
That’s right: the notch is now a selling point. Kane’s supposed phone, the Leagoo S9 Pro, is just one of a tide of iPhone X clones that have swept through Mobile World Congress this week, often from little-known Chinese manufacturers competing to get products out as fast as possible. Oukitel. Doogee. Blackview. UleFone. OtOt. Ila. The list goes on — and it’s starting to include names more familiar to Western audiences. Asus’ new Zenfone 5 takes obvious notch inspiration from Apple’s latest phone, while leaks suggest that Huawei’s next flagship will follow a similar path.

The simple truth is that these notches don’t need to exist. They’re a stylistic choice, and the latest example of Apple design decisions being co-opted by much of the tech industry at large.

These Android phones, on the other hand, are often making the notch much bigger than it needs to be. They don’t contain advanced face-scanning tech — usually just a selfie camera, a speaker, and an ambient light sensor. The decision to go with prominent notches is one that simply would not have been taken were it not for the iPhone X.

Not everyone will follow, of course. Samsung, for example, has enough marketing clout of its own that copying Apple would do more harm than good at this point. This week’s Galaxy S9 launch event saw the company hail the new phone’s “uninterrupted display,” with a marketing executive cracking “as always, you know, there’s no notch.”

Wanna know what I think makes it especially dumb on Android? We use the damn notification bar. Even on the smallest DPI I can do with stock AT&T V30 ROM, my icons frequently take up most of the notification bar (**** you very much, AT&T, for the forced tramp stamp as well). I know if I were to get the AT&T version of the G7 I would literally have no room for notifications.

Apple is "discontinuing" -- on paper only -- the original iPhone X to release "improved" version (same size) iPhone X, as well as a larger size iPhone X Plus.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordon...ne-x-buy-sales-specs-new-iphone-release-date/
*the outgoing iPhone X will be replaced by a total of three new iPhone X-inspired designs:
  • a second generation 5.8-inch iPhone X,
  • 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus and
  • a “$650-750” 6.1-inch iPhone SE replacement which will be fitted with Face ID.
Apple hopes it will be the latter two that once again excite the Chinese market.
Part of Apple's problem with the iPhone X is the size. The 5.8" iPhone X with minimal bezels is "too small" for the Chinese market. They love BIG phones for some reason. So, Apple is releasing iPhone X Plus and a 6.1" cheaper phone. The "revised" iPhone X will remain the same size. (LG V30 has bigger OLED display than the iPhone X.)

But the REAL reason Apple is OFFICIALLY discontinuing the model is for future profits. The 2017 models --- iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus -- would normally be the DISCOUNTED 2nd year phones they would continue selling when the 2018 phones are released. Who knows if Apple will continue to do that? But if Apple does, they want to make sure the 2017 iPhone X is NOT on the discount list. Whether there's a discounted 2017 iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, after the 2018 models are released -- I don't know and don't care -- but there will NOT be a "2017 iPhone X". Yet there STILL will be iPhone X being sold.

Apple isn't really discontinuing the iPhone X, they are just re-releasing it. They are merely re-classifying it as a "NEW, improved" iPhone X.

It won't change names -- it won't be iPhone XI -- it will STILL be the iPhone X. Apple will still be selling it. Don't be fooled.

Like all the years of "new, improved" Tide detergent commercials?

Woman: "I don't use Tide anymore."
(Gasps all around).
"I use NEW, IMPROVED Tide!"
(Hint: she's still using Tide detergent.)

Same way Mark Zuckerberg didn't "give away" all his Facebook stock to "charity". Remember that ridiculous PR story? It just was a tax dodge. He STILL controls all that Facebook stock via his Zuckerberg "foundation" -- he can still do anything he wants with it, he didn't give away anything. It was merely a way to reclassify all his holdings as a "charity" -- a charity where he can still give as much money to himself as he wants, but the government can't tax it as personal wealth.

__________

It's also funny about the notch on the iPhone X. For 2019, Apple is trying to REDUCE it, minimize it.

industry insiders have revealed Apple is working with LG Innotek to Significantly reduce the size of the so-called "notch" on the (2019) iPhone X. ET News states this will be done by combining the front-facing camera with Face ID, allowing the notch to be cut away (minimized).

Concept of what LG is trying to help Apple do for the 2019 iPhone X

So, they are working with one of LG's companies to reduce the notch!

I agree. Looks totally retarded kn the iPhone X and it looks just as retarded on that ohone also.

Whoever thought that was an ok feature of a phone must be a moron.
Can you believe Asus copied the unibrow, and bragged that it was smaller than the iPhone X's? How dumb can you get, someone could just say they have 100% smaller notch by not having one at all!

That type of design makes the screen useless to my needs. So any design that incorporates a notch is automatically discarded as a viable option. It was a design fail on the iPhone X, and its going to be a design fail on any other platform as well.

Having said that, Samsung does need to get rid of that surplus of screens that they are stuck with from the iPhone Xs.

While I think the notch is ugly, on the iPhone there really was no way to actually hide it. At least with Android they'll have the option of keeping it black, so the notch will blend in. I also hope that they will allow just the battery percentage if not all icons fit due to the notch.

As for if I will buy it? Well... Probably not. I think I'd be more likely to get a higher spec device with the same body as the V30.

As time goes by, I can see me liking new devices less. The move towards no headphone jack, no fingerprint sensor, the notch, etc makes me feel like I'm getting old. I'm not liking all these moves companies call "Innovative".
