So, I recently installed (a bunch of) Google Camera ports. And I must say, I'm blown away by how much better the JPEGs are. GC JPEGs are just cleaner and with way more details, especially when zoomed in. Breathing life back into this 2-year-old camera sensor. It's definitely not a fast as stock camera app tho, but totally worth it.
