twrp log "Failed to mount '/persist' (Invalid argument)" help me, please!
First thing whenever you post a bug provide proper logs.
I face that problem in previous boot_twrp.img please try latest boot_twrp.img and report back...
If the problem remains then check whether persist is checked under mount section

Regarding the old bootloader, my version is 18.5.C.0.25 instead of 18.5.C.0.19. Does that matter or can I flash the attached file?

Thank you
No it doesn't matter. Just follow the guide.
Flash boot_twrp.img for no root or boot_twrp_magisk.img for root.
Flash system.img with -S 256M parameter

If you want to be root, boot into recovery and flash latest magisk stable (it will fail, don't care of it)

It worked! But I had already flashed back to version (...).19 by the time I read your reply, sorry. The first time I flashed 7.1 it didn't work (I was "stuck" in a loading screen that had a curved line with a circle going through it. The circle kept moving, but even after 20 minutes it didn't start).

For the second attemp, I wiped data from recovery, rebooted and then turned phone off. Flashed the exact same files as the first attempt, and now it worked. On both attempts I flashed boot_twrp_magisk.img instead of _root.img.

However: root is not working.

Anything I could do to help you guys?

I am not following your problem because of my Holidays, but I can tell you that boot_twrp_root.img and boot_twrp_magisk.img is the same ,just rename and before flahs rom you have to full whype all

I'm wondering how you can have a recovery partition with old bootloader, so yes must be like we have no recovery, and if you had read my topic you'll know that we flahs With fastboot

Yes you can flash these boot.imgs with TWRP recovery just make sure while installing a boot.img when twrp asks that does it boot or recovery? Click on boot and flash even i do this method for installing newer update of boot.img.
If you don't flash any of these boot.imgs your phone just simply not boot up

Hey Don't say me sir, since I'm also not a developer...
You can't flash system.img from recovery (without pc) even I tried that but i fails..
Yes you can not in our case the problem is that we use a preciated parameter that sequences the sending and installing system and only fastboot can do it for the moment (-S 256M )

I went back to recovery and flashed the magisk zip and it worked. I assumed the boot_magisk.img meant I didn't have to flash the zip, but apparently you do.

But the Magisk app now shows that I'm failing SafetyNet check. Any suggestions? I tried searching XDA, but there are 30 topics with 30 pages each, dating 30 years ago. I can't even tell which info is still pertinent

Thanks

Bro, it's not possible because this ROM's kernel version is 3.4 and MagiskHide does not work on devices running Linux kernel version lower than 3.8
These old kernels lack critical features for hiding Magisk, so it CANNOT be fixed
