check your gapps, ive noticed that nikgapps caused significant drain without reason after being dirty flashed over for a long time, either that or battery calibration got messed up
Hey Ivan,

thank you! 👍🏼

I read about, that NikGapps have issues more and more.

When I want to change from NikGapps to OpenGApps, then this means to make a complete new installation, right?

Yes babe... that is, what I like really... 😉

Well, folks, I guess, we maybe have an issue now with LOS 20.

@Ivan_Meler could you please check that?

I had charged my S7 up to 100%.

After that charging I did not used it.

Since the charging up to 100% the S7 lost 22% without doing anything.

No apps working in the background.

While just typing these lines in an editor, the S7 lost 2% of battery... adding these lines in here, costs me alltogether 5%...

Something really looks to be wrong...

Hint: the S7 is cold, no warm battery.
Hi Ivan,
I have the same issue since february release, i thought it was my battery who was out of order, but i see that i'm not alone. I use LOS 20 since december 2022 and everything was good so far.
Thanks for your analyse.

Byt he way : great job, i use your rom since 2020 !

If you wipe system partition, gapps are also gone and you can change to open gapps. Please correct me if i am wrong.

MoinMoin forum,

("moinmoin" is german, means a good morning, and is said in the area of Oldenburg in Lower Saxony state in Germany day and night...) ;)

Well... it looks like we gonna have a party here 😇

And I also saw, that moderator was active 👍

But now lets talk a littlebit technical:

This night I charged my Samsung Galaxy S7 completely - and did not touched it since an hour before these lines.

It was charged 100%, but just not in usage, it lost 28% on battery now just by laying arround unused. Absolutely no usage.

I will give it a try with changing from NikGapps to OpenGapps.

But I remember, that with LOS 19.1 a few months ago there was also an issue with the battery - @Ivan_Meler can it be, that the actual battery problem in LOS 20 maybe is the same?

Please give us a hint about this, Ivan - and I am sorry for the inconvenience, Ivan, but this battery stuff is really an issue.
(It would be nice, if we all could use our S7s without battery... but actually this might be not possible ;))

One remark to that guy, who was so aggressive:
He wrote, I saw that in the eMails, that he does not use Google stuff, so no GApps, but also has that battery issue in LOS 19.1 and 20.
What, if he is right with that, if this battery stuff is, in fact, not the reason f.e. with the NikGApps?

Greetings to you all,

Well, this sounds interesting, because it would not make it neccessary to install completely new.

But: anyone more knows about this hint of @ssauger ?

@Ivan_Meler ? Does this work?

I just want to be safe by doing this, because for me as a handicapped person it is hard work to make a new install because of that Gapps stuff.

This is definitely triggered on the gapps stuff. I've always used vanilla LOS. These battery problems never surfaced.

Ok... thank you.

Just to be sure: this means, that if one installs just the LineageOS, he does not have battery issues?

But if so, what is about those rumors, that the battery issues are also in LOS without the Gapps?

And why and how the Gapps can influence the battery?

For me this is important, because vanilla LOS ist not usable for me, I need several apps from the Google Play Store, without those I cannot use the Samsung Galaxy S7 completely.

MicroG is also no solution, because may of the apps from Google Play Store, I use, do not work with MicroG.

At least that applies to my device. As I said, I never had above-average battery consumption.
Well... thats mad.

Still dont understand, how the Gapps can influence the battery... and why they do so...

I will give now a try on my testing S7 with MindTheGapps, because this is the Gapps, what is officially recommended GApps solution by the LOS team for its custom ROM.

We will see.

MoinMoin,

I had asked Nikhil, the maintainer of NikGapps about the battery drain and his product, @Ivan_Meler had talked about here.

I did, because from all the Gapps, wich were listed here on XDA, just the NikGapps had worked propery with my Samsung Galaxy S7, either with Ivan's LOS 19.1 or 20.

I had tested this today, it was boring, but in fact only NikGapps work fine during installation with TWRP and later when setting up the S7.

Because I need that Google stuff, I have to install a Gapps - and because here only the NikGapps work, I have to take them.

Here is Nikhils answer:

https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/android-13-gapps-nikgapps-arm64.3915866/post-88348173

Hi,

There are plenty of reasons which can be responsible for battery drain. To name a few

1. Spoofing your device to make it look like pixel leads to battery drain as it makes google execute processes that are exclusive for pixel and ends up failing because your device is not pixel

2. Any app that acquires wake lock continuously drains the battery, sometimes it's the kernel that's responsible behind it.

3. A lot of location accessing apps - they run in the background and eat up the juice and we keep wondering what's going on.

To summarize, one cannot hold any gapps package to be responsible for battery drain without evidence (logcat showing gapps spamming that doesn't happen with any other gapps)

I suggest, you flash the smallest package - NikGapps core and observe your experience with no mods and just basic apps.

The over time, keep on adding stuff and determine the root cause.

I answered to Nikhil:

Thank you @Nilkhil

I had tried today a few Gapps with LOS 19.1 and 20 - only your NikGapps could be installed without errors and without trouble later during setting up my Samsung Galaxy S7 with LOS.

I have installed NikGApps Core.

In fact I have installed a navigation app - have now switched of its location accessing, and only will use it, when sit in a car.

The other stuff he talked about is too technical for me.

@Ivan_Meler please tell us:
Do your LOS 19.1 and 20 lets look the S7 like Google Pixel, and if so, does this maybe could cause the problems, Nikhil mentioned under 1.?

I really appreciate your answer, Ivan!

nope it does not spoof any props to pixel at all, if you run getprop | grep fingerprint in adb shell you will see those are s7 fingerprints from stock

Ok, thank you, @Ivan_Meler

I will watch that battery drain now a little on my daily driver S7 (your LOS 20 with NikGApps 13 Core) and then we will see... as long as I am at home, this is not so problematic, because I have charging units in each room of my apartment.

Outside that could be a problem, but for the foreseeable future I will not be outside or in car...

We will see... 🤷‍♂️

I'm using NickGapps Core on LineageOS 19 (Galaxy S7 Edge) with Battery Saver enabled in settings and battery drain overnight is approx 4%.

Here is much more actually... but I have suspect: I had used AdAway from F-Droid Store on my first S7 (daily driver)... have removed it now, I will see, how it is now with the battery...

MoinMoin guys,

I have now decided to get to the bottom of the battery problems with Android 13 and Samsung Galaxy S7, as far as I can as a normal user.

The Rom LOS 20 from @Ivan_Meler and NikGapps 13 Core are installed on my Daily Driver S7. The device is fully installed with all the apps I need and is ready to use, but it consumes a lot of battery power. I currently have to reload several times a day in order to always have 80% full memory (this is urgently necessary for me as a severely disabled person and wheelchair user, because I always have to reckon with having to go to the doctor or even a hospital, for example).

LOS 20 from @Ivan_Meler is now also installed on my test S7, but without the Google stuff, i.e. without GApps, I am trying to set up this test S7 completely, but without (!) any GApps, and I use the Aurora Store and F-Droid. This is because many say, that the high power consumption is due to the GApps.

Previously (!) I had installed the ROM "EvolutionX" on the test S7, which runs with GApps and is Android 13. It's very nicely done, but I found that EvolutionX uses a similar amount of battery as Ivan's LOS 20 with NikGapps.

Well, with LOS 20 from Ivan and WITHOUT GApps on the test S7, I have to say that the battery consumption is not exactly low either.

Later more.

Question: can it be that Android 13 (LOS 20) on the old Samsung Galaxy S7 consumes too much battery power per se, because Android 13's power requirements are simply very high, maybe too high for those old smartphones?

If so, would it then make more sense to only operate the Samsung Galaxy S7 with an older LOS, i.e. about 18 or 17, i.e. Android 11 or 10?

I would be gratefü for some answers.

Have all a nice weekend!

That's some great observations you got there! I even had changed Gapps to see if the cause was within it.

Then I left Lineage 20 to 19 and I'm surprised!

And now I'm almost getting 4h30m of SOT and battery life in standby/doze mode is satisfying (better than stock in my case)

I'm waiting some days to Magisk the system so that I get better and solid results

I could also observe that some animations in LOS20 were laggy in my end, the more noticeable being the "slide down to open notification panel"

Or multitasking being a little on the slow side

And I have none of those in LOS19

What I still have, similarly to 20, however is the lag (crackle noise) when listening to music while browsing anything or multitasking. I'm not using any audio effects for now and it is a recurrent issue for me.

Just an additional note, that I report those issues to bring into question if there are more things that we can improve in it, not to negatively criticize the work conducted by the dev in any way.

If there is anything I can do such as post logs, I'm available...

@Shiningb

Thanks for your information!

It should be noted, that I am also only writing my observation here to contribute to the fact, that the ROM may improve.

I'm not criticizing, I'm very grateful to @Ivan_Meler and I want to help as best I can.

But it really seems, that LOS 20 in fact needs too much battery power, and I remember at the beginning of LOS 19 there was something similar.

@Ivan_Meler please: is there some more possibility to reduce the power consumption in your LOS 20?

I would consider replacing the battery atleast every 2 Years. Since the S7 is 6 -7 years old. battery should be worst anyway if its isnt replaced yet.

Here is a little surprise update for everyone here.. So lets begin with a changelog
    - Switched to more source built components from new Exynos 850/Linaro BSP
    • hwcomposer
    • memtrack
    • libion_exynos
    • libGrallocWrapper
    • gralloc
    • libcsc
    • libexynosscaler
    • libexynosgscaler
    • libhwjpeg
    • Whole OMX stack (libOMX.Exynos.*) and stagefrighthw
    - Cleaned up source and got rid of libutils vndk32 workaround
    - Performance, stability and battery life improvements
    - Synced with LineageOS source

This changes quite a lot of under the hood stuff and gets rid of a lot of proprietary blobs by replacing them with much more up to date source built components, if you are compiling on your own dont forget to update roomservice.xml as always all of the source has been pushed to https://github.com/8890q , This has been in works since middle of 2022 but i never got around to finishing it and fixing few remaining bugs that came from bsp until this week, so i really hope you all enjoy it.
In general this will help s7 live a bit longer as we have way more control over most of the hals on device

This will also make its way to 19.1 builds soon and maybe even 18.1.

Huge thanks to everyone who supported this project as their donations help cover build server cost and cover coffee spent while debugging some of weirder stuff

Enjoy new builds and stay safe

    - Synced with LineageOS source

19.1, 18.1 and 17.1 builds will be out in a few days if everything goes as planed.

Huge thanks to everyone who supported this project thru the years, helped cover the build server cost and got me coffee, This project wouldnt be possible without your support.

note: github caching seems to be broken and otas wont show up till cached files on github end update, it will hapen eventually and unfortunately i have no control over it.
You can manually download zip from google drive or mega and flash it in the meantime, Thanks for understanding.

Enjoy new builds and stay safe
