Need help as well...

I've installed Linux Installer 3.3 and successfully run command line linux...however I found out that Ubuntu and BT5 won't work on a Samsung Captivate running Fasty because it requires some kind of loop...I'm now looking for a custom ROM that will run loop so that I can install a linux OS like Ubuntu desktop on my Captivate...any suggestions...?

prolly a noob thing to do, but since root is already 0 and uid is already set to 0. Looking in the sh file all I see is its exporting that data for whatever use, but if its not found it ignores it. So i commented just the UID=0 out and it boot right in..at least the the bash. Now im lost..lol..using aptitude trying to get some type of gui that i can show off to someone who knows nothing but "Thats so cool dude!"

Error: unknown compression type

Hi all,

Very nice app. However, I am trying to install Ubuntu (Natty) or Debian (stable) on my Asus EEE Pad without luck. Both Ubuntu and Debian installation processes fail due to the same issue: unknown compression type for certain DEBs with ar (embedded BusyBox used).

This is a log file fragment for Debian installation:
Code:
E: 1 - Unknown compression type for in .//var/cache/apt/archives/libacl1_2.2.49-4_armel.deb
I: Extracting libacl1...
I: Chosen extractor for .deb packages: ar
I: Validating zlib1g
I: Retrieving zlib1g
I: Validating xz-utils
I: Retrieving xz-utils
I: Validating wget
I: Retrieving wget
Is it me or something is wrong with bootstraps supplied with the app?

Regards

dugryce loop support is not mandatory; try block or directory methods.

just_mike internal application error; please send us your linuxchroot script file by email, we need to see what's in.

sysmai there are several root users in Android, and they have different access. Being UID=0 is not enough, uid=0 need to be obtain using specific methods. Register and use the distribution manager; it will help you installing some WM, then you can use VNC.

jpkx1984 send a bug report using the console.

Nice. So it is possible to develop on android itself. Incredible. Endless possibilities.
Got my first kernel built on a Nexus S (lasts 65m) with SuperOSR v2 rom.
Put it in a .zip and installed. Build by me on my smartphone ;-) (thanks morfic for your work!).
Thank you very much guys.

hailmary what's missing in your kernel ? I don't know any Android that won't have ext2 in; if you have an Android without any ext2 filesystem, please contact me in private, I know it could be done, and I would be VERY CURIOUS to see how HTC did it.

If you are missing loop support in kernel, try block or directory method. Blocck will require ext2; directory won't (but will work only over ext FS ... so ... unless you can use NFS )

i already tried it before w/ (block & directory) & a ext2/ext3 on my sdcard...i got mount error messages...
& still the same "kernel not supported" error upon launch of the app.

now cm7RC1.5 is released-stable build w/ few sdcard tweak patched by devs.
i did a new clean install of everything.my defy is now ready again..will reinstall apk & will redownload loop file..also will get a partition slice (ext2/ext3) if necessary..
BTW i use minitool partition for winXP,im a windows user;)

will send you logs again soon as i get time.i really love to see this work on mine, as well as to others.thanks

PS.
its running fine on stock motoROM 2.2 froyo..tested & its flawless...
i even posted in my facebook the link of the app for more testers & users ;)

Hi. Greatly appreciate your efforts! Have you had any success getting Open Office to work? Also wondering if anyone had tried this on a Droid 3 or other Android device with a HWKB.

the file is in system/xbin/linuxchroot.sh
or system/bin/linuxchrootsh

I would like and need the file to mount the img from an install. I have an image but dont want to go threw a full install to get the file

tutorial

the tutorial posted abovewwwyanzicjustnubie.wordpress.com...tu-on-android is pretty decent.

Things to note if you are following the tutorial. You should set aside 2gigs for the loop if you are installing Deian to make sure there is enough room to install the GUI.

Do use the ip address listed in the "Distribution Management" of Linux Installer * or simply type "localhost" as the ip address for vnc

Don't bother copying and pasting the commands listed in the tutorial for binding the window session with VNC. Take your time and type it in manually.

That being said. has anyone managed to get Ubuntu "natty" running. I've tried and every time i apt-get update, the non-free repo fails. does anyone know if this is user or server error?

and Lastly, with my limited understanding of co-op OS, is the reason for the no sound issue rooted in the fact that the resource is prioritized to Android?
