Listening to headphones while charging

This new feature is the best

I loved it when Apple did this exact same thing when they switched to the lightning adapter! Apple was so creative but not as brilliant as this. Trading a wire from my phone to my headset (which I will always have both on me) to a series of adapters OR a bunch of different chargers that I need to carry with me OR a nest of chargers everywhere I go is a huge upgrade! Anker is now selling 4 usb port rapid chargers so 2 people in my car can always be topped up. I sure hope Google doesn't invent a way to charge wirelessly because I love owning more adapters, cables, and chargers! Eliminating a jack that billions of people have been using since 1878 is totally ground breaking. This is the best user experience EVER! I love you Google!!!

I bought the Konecta from Amazon.

Bluetooth Transmitter Receiver Adapter – Best Portable Mini Wireless 3.5mm Audio Transmitter Kit (aptX Low Latency Dongle), Dual Connector For TV, Sound System, Car, Gym, Headphones, Speakers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M9B2YSV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ygvSAbW1EPHPA. The sound is way better than the Google supplied dongle. I never thought I would be satisfied with going this route to convert my wired Beyer Dynamics headset to Bluetooth. But for $30 it was much less hassle than the Google dongle work - around, cheaper, and much better sound. Sounds every bit as good as the sound from the headphone jack of the Nexus 6. I recommend this route.
What are you talking about? How would it defeat the purpose? If you're referring to the assumption that wired > wireless in terms of quality, that's no longer the case my friend.

Honestly, I think people just want something to complain about... They're willing to drop nearly $1k on a new phone every year, but are completely beside themselves over buying new headphones or purchasing an adapter.

Yeah, it's cheaper than that Moshi adapter and only $15 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075FHLTNM/

Pros:
Cheap, $14.99
Works
Rapid Charging works

Cons:
It's slightly bulky and not very portable.
3.5mm port NOT included, BUT every Pixel 2 owner has the adapter already (3.5 USB C adapter -> 3.5mm headphone).

Those links are dead. Any working links for a (non-bluetooth) headphone solution while charging?

Oh man. I just ordered a Pixel 2 (for her), and a Pixel 2 XL (for me) about 4 hours ago. And did not think about this issue until now. It's not an issue for me, but the wife falls to sleep listening to audio books, etc.
I can't believe there's no solution outside a bluetooth dongle to plug your headphones into. And it looks like the Moshi adaptor is dead and gone.

Crap. She's going to be bummed.

Or get a cheap pair of Bluetooth headphones for her and keep the phone charging.

Yeah, she has a specific set of needs where that might not work. She indeed uses the BT stuff in most instances. But for sleeping, being an insomniac, she needs the whitenoise/audiobook going all night. Assuming they last that long per charge, and having to charge them every morning, not to mention most BT headphones tend to not "fit" as snug as her buds... etc etc. Not saying it's insurmountable, but it will be an inconvenience for her, and she will make it known it me. ;)
Like they say, happy wife, happy life.

Hey now, no need to get rude. My wife isn't the most technically savvy, and certainly doesn't read XDA. I can tell her over and over she doesn't need to, but old habits.
More importantly, why would anyone be dumb enough to leave their phone on charge overnight?

There's nothing wrong with leaving your phone charging overnight. It's an old myth. I do most nights because I sleep track with my Pebble to the Sleep As Android app.

In that case, I would think playing white noise or an audiobook all night with wired headphones wouldn't drain the phone that much battery anyway. She could just top off the battery while getting ready for bed.

Yeah, some people still insist that's an "issue" and can't be ... "reminded" otherwise. I leave all my **** charging when I'm not using it. That's what the chips in the chargers do, make sure the cells are being charged properly.

I'm pretty certain this won't be a "real" issue for her, once I've shown her how fast quick charge in the morning will set her up for the day. Haha, she just doesn't like change. Took me 2 years to convince her BT was actually pretty great, and now she loves her Anker speaker, etc.
From all accounts, what I am reading (since posting my OP on this last night), the batt in her Pixel 2 should be fine for what she does. My concern might be if she sets up a vid playlist from my Plex seedbox, and trys to fall asleep listening to say... the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, that might make an impact.

I think the research I've done since my first post alleviates most of my concerns. But the fact that it's an issue that's not been addressed by Goog is annoying.
(Also just realized my XDA sig is horribly out of date, haha)

More a case of shouldn't! Ask most people with knackered batteries and you'll find they leave them on charge overnight.

They charge fine but what you're overlooking is they also charge it up to a point and then stop, the battery runs down to a preset level and the charge starts again, rinse and repeat all night, every night. Batteries have a finite number of recharges.

It's finite recharge "cycles". That's 0-100% or 50-100% two times and every variation in between. Even if my phone was 100% when going to bed, unplugged I only lose something like 3-5% while sleeping over 7 hours. That's 1 charge cycle every 20 days at the minimum. Not exactly a huge number of recharges.

As a fellow insomniac who uses headphones all night, I've been happy with a dirt cheap pay-as-you-go phone that lives on my nightstand. I think I got it for $10 or $15 over the holidays, and it just lives on my WiFi. You can usually find decent ones inexpensive at supermarkets or Target or Walmart or Amazon. Plus, using a dedicated phone for insomnia listening means you won't offend anyone else who critiques your charging habits on the Pixel phone.

If your wife doesn't need two earbuds in at a time, airpods might do the trick, you can use one at a time and if it dies, just switch to the other fully charged one. This method will get you around 10 hours of audio. They are also much closer to the shape and fit of standard "old fashioned" earbuds. The bass is a bit much when I listen to podcasts, but most apps provide an equalizer. They also charge pretty quick by placing it into their carrying case. Anyway, I don't generally like Apple, but the airpods have been pretty convenient even on my Pixel 2 xl. I was lucky enough to get a Moshi before they mysteriously disappeared too, it's worked great.

Another option is to just not charge at night, the battery is pretty good, then charge in the morning or in the car. It sucks we have to come up with solutions to something that shouldn't be a problem to begin with. I still can't believe they removed the jack without even looking into a solution for charging and using headphones.

This works:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07FCD3JZP/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Fast charge , buttons on the headphones work to answer the phone , and sounds good too.

:)

I confirm that this product works. It charges phone fast, on my lock screen, it's written "Charging rapidly (##mins) ", the sound is brilliant, it doesn't heat up like other adapters. I'm so happy with this purchase, i'll buy more as an extra. So far i have lots of adapters with dac, but this is my home/office adapter since i charge while listen to music or game.. =)

for the adapter to use when you're outside i use their normal dac. and one from aliexpress
