I received my 128GB Pixel 2 XL on Friday, and as of Saturday night, it was already back in the box and the return submitted. I REALLY wanted to love this phone. Ordered it knowing about the potential for a less than stellar display. Even though I already have a Galaxy S8+, and I don't really have many complaints about it, Samsung bloat is a very real thing, and it affects the phone in many ways. So I loved the idea of pure Google. I had a Nexus 6 many phones ago, and even with its issues it was great.

It doesn't take much for me to justify the purchase of a new gadget, I'm kind of an addict. And I don't have ANY brand loyalty, though I am definitely an Android fanboi in general. I loved pretty much everything about my Huawei Mate 9 - if that phone had waterproofing and an OLED display I’d probably still have it. I use my phone as my alarm clock at night, so the always-present backlight of LED displays is a killer for me. Need them OLED blacks!

So without further adieu - my P2XL observances, in no particular order:
CON: Display blue shift - the blue shift wasn't a deal breaker in and of itself, but it was definitely noticeable and intrusive for me. I may have gotten used to it, but combined with everything else.....
CON: Speakers - I expected more quality from the speakers. I remember the Nexus 6 sounding much better than the P2XL, and the Mate 9 even sounded much better with pseudo-stereo speakers.
CON: Ambient Display - VERY minimal and not as useful as Samsung's. Changing tracks, notifications, even having a photo on there is pretty nice.
CON: Fingerprint sensor - Not even close to as sensitive as the Mate 9. Even though the positioning on the P2XL was 942% better than the S8+ fingerprint sensor (especially since I use my phone left handed), I just couldn't get the Pixel sensor to quickly and reliably unlock each time. I was very much looking forward to having a usable fingerprint sensor. Better than the Samsung, but just positioning, not performance.
CON: Burn-in - I didn't personally notice any burn-in, but I didn't look for it either as I was pretty sure it would be there based on all the previous reviews and Google’s admission of its existence. The possibility of it being noticeable and intrusive in a matter of weeks was always in the back of my mind, and didn’t lend to confidence in the quality of the display.
CON: PRICE - 'nuff said.

PRO: Even after enjoying the displays of the Note 5, S7 Edge, and S8+, I didn't mind the P2XL colors at all. In fact I preferred it to the super-vibrant S8+ display. Accurate colors are good. They didn’t look “washed out” to me, but Samsung definitely looks exaggerated/fake/inaccurate.
PRO: Speed - there's no question the P2XL is VERY fast. For having the same processor as the S8+, it sure doesn't feel like it. Samsung lag is real, even if it's not obtrusive most of the time. With the Pixel, bang boom it's done.
PRO: Battery life - even though I only used it for 1.5 days, it was evident the battery life was going to be stellar.
PRO: Camera - no need to even go into it. Awesome. Fantastic.
PRO: Android auto was FAST. Holy crap. Very noticeable difference using AA on the Pixel vs the S8+.

I was fairly neutral on the lack of wireless charging and headphone jack. Although I use wireless charging every night, it's not much more difficult to plug in. Wireless was much more of a necessity for me with the Note 5, as the battery life wasn't good enough to last all day. Just kept it on my Qi stand at work, and never had to worry about it. not an issue with the S8+ or the P2XL, so it's moot. And the headphone jack - I already have 3 decent pairs of BT headphones, and plan on getting a good set of BT 5.0 earbuds when the "ideal" set becomes available. I rarely use wired anymore, and I don't think I'd ever really miss the jack.

So basically, I liked (not loved) the P2XL For me there were too many compromises for me to justify the premium price. Yep it’s fast, and has top-tier INTERNALS, but when you’re interfacing with a sub-par display, fingerprint reader, and speakers for hours a day, it’s just too much to pay. It’s like getting a OnePlus 5 when you paid for an iPhone X. The OnePlus is a fine device, but most wouldn’t pay almost 1k for it. If the P2XL 128GB was $600, maybe. Over $900 - no way.

TL;DR - Bottom line, just as the reviewer (and many others) stated, the quality of the device just doesn’t match the price tag. There wasn’t a single deal-breaker for me personally, but the cons all added up to make it not worth the purchase price. Keeping my eye on the Mate 10 Pro….

Bye Felicia! Nobody cares why your returning it. Get your validation from somewhere else.
The ONLY reason I posted was for informational purposes for people who may be on the fence. If you don't care why I returned it, why did you bother to read and then comment on the thread?

I'm sure not looking for validation from the likes of you... Just posting honest, non fanboi opinions. That's all.

After reading this I have 1 question, did you return the S8+? You presented as many cons for it as you did the P2XL...
Good question. I considered it, but for the price paid (~$200 USD after T-Mo BOGO), it was a no brainer. There are certainly things I don't like about the S8+, but overall it is is a very good phone. I would probably like the Note 8 a LITTLE more, but the smaller battery and cost of upgrading are preventing it.

With a bunch of Sammy crap disabled and Nova Launcher, I'm pretty happy with it, but as most of us are, always looking forward to the next best thing. With the P2XL, I just couldn't see how it was better than the S8+ I already had. May have been a different result if I still had the Mate 9 - may have stuck with the Pixel, not sure..... Certainly not hating on the Pixel, but in comparison I couldn't justify getting rid of the S8+. Mostly because of the cost - if the P2XL wasn't so expensive, it may have been a different outcome.

So then the reason you're returning it isn't for all the cons you mentioned, it's because you bought it off contract. In other words, had T-Mobile absorbed some of the cost you'd be perfectly fine with it, no?

I'm no trying to discourage you, but most of those things can be fixed with software updates. I agree with you on most, but I'm thinking they'll get fixed with software OTAs after how much bad press Google has received

If most of the issues get fixed, I may just turn around and get another one... Maybe the price will go down a bit due to the issues, or at least maybe I could pick up a used one for cheaper. I am a bona-fide phone whore, and I truly loved the speed of the phone, but for now it's the cost to benefit ratio that led to my decision. Lots of variables in that equation, including need for new gadgets, software updates, etc.

I think for me it's more of a direct comparison to the S8+ I already have. If I didn't already have the S8+, I'd likely be shopping S8+ vs Note 8 vs Pixel 2 XL. Cost would still come into play, but with everything else being equal, right now I'm not sure which way I'd go. I would likely be inclined to wait it out and see if they improve the Pixel. Still may go that way too, depending on what they pull off in the next month or two. There are reasons I risked spending that kind of dough on a phone I decidedly didn't NEED, but the rewards just didn't materialize for me. Maybe that will change in the near future. Actually hope it does.

Nah, I could afford to just buy it outright and I wouldn't even notice it financially, but I try to be somewhat smart with my money so I can continue to afford things. There's a big difference between buying EVERYTHING you want and just buying what you REALLY want....Not saying I've never made stupid financial mistakes (usually cars), but I just need to justify my purchases. Sometimes that justification can be more emotional than logical, but I still need to think about it and make sure I'm making a smart decision for myself...

Yep, I'm the guy who uses spreadsheets to make decisions about many, many things.

Pros and cons reads like a list of reasons to buy the 2XL. Haha. Cons - issues are overblown, but the phone is a little pricey. Pros - phone is actually amazing.

Incorrect. The OP's observations are both reasonable and presented in a fair way. These comments may not sway some users, but it might sway others who are still on the fence and care about apecific features/functionality mentioned by OP. No device is perfect of course, including the Pixels. We learn more from a single critical review than from hundreds of 'I love it' posts. You may not care about OP's experience (and that's fine!), but it certainly isn't a unanimous opinion.

Interesting impressions on the fingerprint reader. The fingerprint reader on the Nexus 6p and OG Pixel were possibly the fastest and most accurate around. Many reviews I've seen mentioned it's actually gotten better/faster than OG pixel. Maybe fastest in any phone. Possibly, your device had a faulty fingerprint reader?

It is. The fingerprint reader works perfectly. This is an obvious troll post to sway sentiment away from the 2XL. So transparent it's ridiculous.

Okay.....

Certainly possible the fingerprint reader on mine is less than ideal. I have nothing to lose or gain by posting my opinions. I couldn't care less if you buy a pixel or don't. For me it wasn't the right phone, but it may be for the rest of you. And nowhere did I say it was a horrible, terrible, no good phone. Don't understand why a select few of you get so butthurt over dissenting opinions. Most here, even if they disagree, have been interested in discussing. That is what most adults do. <snarky comment about reading comprehension redacted>. Hell, I would certainly hope someone who is keeping an expensive phone loves it! For ME, the love wasn't there, so I didn't keep it. Pretty simple concept for most.
