Looking for guidance to unlock bootloader.

Can someone help me unlock my bootloader? as some of the guides are quite confusing, so maybe someone can help me.

I also have some questions too:

Can this brick your device? If so, is it recoverable?

Not exactly. draxie's script is written in Python, so it'll work on any platform (i.e. Mac OS X) provided that you have Python installed.

It's universal, there just isn't a simple click-through installer for any Mac OS X like there is for Windows.
You can still download the source ZIP and run setup.py.

Anyways — luckily for you — there's no need to stress as draxie released an update that doesn't require gmpy2 anymore.
