Is there any chance a root for the ATT version is in the works? SM-T817A? I just picked one up and Im a little bitter I cant root it. I must have misread what was currently rootable.
Kingroot and KingOroot are your best options.

Did you make a backup with TWRP before flashing?
This method is a little outdated now.
You can use your own boot image now.
Restore your unrooted rom or unroot with superuser first then restore the stock boot.img with twrp.
Now flash this for root.

Thanks for all work on this device tree @ashyx !

Just to confirm I read this correctly, the T817T can be rooted using SuperSU 2.65 with it's own stock boot.IMG (not the modded offering in your original post?

TWRP installed. Flashed SU 2.65. Root checker says its not rooted. When I flash, none of my partitions mount. Even though I decline to mount the system in -ro. Anyone else having this issue?
I had this issue too. Are you using TWRP 3.0.0? I couldn't get system, cache, etc to mount so when I tried to flash SU 2.65, it would say fail to mount and when I checked root, it said no SU binaries installed.

I solved the problem by flashing TWRP 2.8.7.1 via Odin and then flashing boot.img and then SU 2.65 right after and it magically worked on my T817T.

Here is the link to TWRP 2.8.7.1. Use twrp_2.8.7.1_LL_5.1.1_t810 for Lollipop 5.1.1.

That issue is fixed in TWRP 3.0.0-1
